About the Department & Team 

Alfred Pharmacy is well recognised for high quality and innovative patient- focused services, education and training programmes as well as significant research output. The service operates over 4 sites within the Alfred Care Group, and continually advocates for postgraduate learning and research interests, with supportive partnerships and expert mentors available to foster staff development.   

The Pharmaceutical Management team is responsible for the procurement, distribution and governance of medicine supply across the Alfred Care Group. This is managed through a unique, proactive and co-ordinated approach; utilising close working relationships with external suppliers (Symbion, Baxter) to deliver medications to both Pharmacy and Pharmacy related medication imprest areas across the organisation. 

Adoption and expansion of technology is a key component, embracing the use of new digital functionality and the evaluation of data within medication related systems to allow for targeted, efficient responses to medication supply processes. The team works closely with our Digital Health, Medication Safety and Formulary programs to ensure continued availability of the most up to date treatments in a cost-effective manner. This is a continually evolving portfolio that looks to innovative approaches in improving and refining how its service can be provided, while assisting to deliver on department and organisation wide strategic goals. 

The Role

We are seeking an enthusiastic and motivated Senior Procurement Officer to join the Pharmaceutical Management Team. This role is suited to someone with experience in healthcare purchasing in a public or private setting or a pharmacy technician with relevant purchasing experience looking to take the next step in their career. 

In this role, you will:

  • Be responsible for purchasing and receiving pharmaceutical products and general supplies across Alfred Care Group
  • Support the Pharmacy Procurement Manager and broader Pharmaceutical Management team to ensure timely access to medications and goods, in accordance with formulary and contract guidelines
  • Communicate regularly with key stakeholders using near-real time purchasing data to troubleshoot purchasing related issues
  • Gain insight and understanding into strategic planning and practical considerations surrounding stock shortages in collaboration with the Drug Availability Working Group
  • Supervise procurement and inventory technicians together with the broader leadership group

To succeed in this role, you will:

  • Have prior purchasing and/or stores experience in a health setting or be an experienced pharmacy technician with relevant experience purchasing pharmaceuticals
  • Have strong communication skills, with demonstrated ability to work with internal and external stakeholders to achieve positive solutions
  • Be adaptable and be able to work autonomously as well as part of a team
  • Have excellent attention to detail and time management skills
  • Be able to problem solve and demonstrate the ability to take initiative and show leadership
  • Adopt a patient-centred approach to care

Qualifications/Experience Required

  • Experience in managing pharmaceutical products with a sound knowledge of purchasing, supply techniques and inventory control is desirable
  • Tertiary qualification is desirable.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills essential
  • Knowledge of hospital pharmacy operations is an advantage.
