Alfred Mental and Addiction Health is responsible for the operation of services, which focus on people with a severe mental illness residing in the Inner South Eastern area of Melbourne.

What you’ll be doing

POSITION SUMMARY

AMAH employs a number of Peer Support Workers across the Program, including in the Adult Child and Youth settings such as the Inpatient Units, Residential Rehabilitation, PARC and Community Teams. Peer Support Workers may be Consumer Peer Support Workers, or Carer Peer Support Workers. Peer Support Workers are an important and growing part of the mental health workforce.

Consumer Peer Support Workers are integral members of the multidisciplinary team who possess expertise through a lived experience of mental health challenges. Through sharing wisdom from their own experiences, Consumer Peer Support Workers inspire hope and provide support to clients accessing clinical community mental health services. This position is based within the St Kilda Road Clinic Community Mental Health Teams where there are currently 3 Peer Support Worker positions. Operationally the Consumer Peer Support Workers report to the Nurse Manager SKRC CMHT.

As an integral and highly valued member of the multi-disciplinary team, the Consumer Peer Support Worker will provide formalised peer support and practical assistance to service users, to support them through their own unique recovery process. Within a relationship of mutuality and information sharing, they will promote choice, selfdetermination,hope and opportunities to seek or maintain socially valued roles and connections in their local communities.

Support and supervision of the Consumer Peer Support Workers is provided by the Peer Support Coordinator as well as through the Consumer Peer Support (Community of Practice) Supervision. Operationally this Consumer Peer Support Workers report to the Nurse Manager SKRC CMHT.

The Consumer Peer Support Worker role can offer a unique perspective on recovery that requires a different approach than mainstream clinical mental health service delivery.

The Consumer Peer Support Worker key focus of practice will be to focus on the support of client in:

  • Informed choice / decision making
  • Understanding the use of the Mental health Act 2014

QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

Mandatory:

Experience in providing consumer Peer Support in a formal capacity

Desirable

Successful completion of training such as Intentional Peer Support or equivalent.

Tertiary qualifications preferred either in:

  • Certificate IV in Peer Work
  • Certificate IV in Mental Health

Other relevant information:

  • Current Victorian Driver’s License
  • Satisfactory completion of a Police Check
  • Satisfactory completion of Working with Children Check
