The Department

Alfred Health Occupational Therapy Services operates across The Alfred, Caulfield and Sandringham Hospitals, with clinical services aligned to Alfred Health's strategic goals and operational performance targets. The Occupational Therapy Service is committed to the provision of high quality, evidence-based care, and strongly values professional development and clinical supervision. This role is situated on the Trauma & Orthopaedics ward (5West). Ward 5West is a 40-bed ward (including 8 single-bed patient rooms), with a dedicated surgical procedure zone, active therapy zones and spaces for families and carers.

In 2020, an enhanced Allied Health model of care was introduced to Ward 5West, with a primary philosophy centring around early rehabilitation and a “Home First” focus, resulting in patients returning to home sooner without the need for ongoing inpatient care.  The multi-disciplinary model is delivered 7 days a week and has resulted in improved recovery outcomes for Trauma and Orthopaedic patients.  The primary patient cohorts on Ward 5West include those with: multi-trauma (including intra-hospital transfers from ICU), spinal & pelvic fractures, chest injuries, and head trauma.  Ward 5W also includes a specialised medical team focussed on providing care to a growing older trauma patient cohort.

Position Summary

An exciting opportunity exists for a Grade 3 Senior Clinician Occupational Therapist with a passion for providing early acute rehabilitation to join the Ward 5West team at The Alfred in a permanent ongoing capacity. This role is designed as a clinical grade 3 role, with the successful candidate managing a clinical caseload in the areas of Trauma and Orthopaedics, as well as leading quality and research initiatives as part of the Ward 5West senior leadership team.

The senior clinician in this role will be responsible for leading an occupational therapy team to deliver a service focused on early rehabilitation, including return to daily activities and complex discharge planning.

The Ward 5West Allied Health workforce model holds a rehabilitation mindset at the core. It enables early, intensive intervention across physical, functional, cognitive and psychosocial domains with attention on the achievement of patient directed goals.

The Ward 5West multi-disciplinary Allied Health team is led by Allied Health Team Leads, supported by Multi-disciplinary Allied Health Assistants (AHA’s) and works closely with the Nursing and Medical teams to provide a comprehensive and timely service to patients on the acute ward. The successful applicant will lead the occupational therapy clinicians within the team and engage with key stakeholders to build teamwork and a culture of collaboration. The incumbent will also be responsible for supervising Grade 1 and Grade 2 clinicians, students, and driving service development and planning in relation to the model of care.
