The Department

The Department of Infectious Diseases at the Alfred Hospital is one of the largest and most comprehensive infectious diseases clinical services in the country. It is also an academic Department within the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences, Central Clinical School, Monash University and is a premier centre for clinical and biomedical research and education.

The Department offers expertise in general infectious diseases, HIV/AIDS, hospital-acquired infections and antimicrobial resistance, infection prevention and antimicrobial stewardship, travel-related infections, viral hepatitis, sexually-transmitted infections, and infections in immunocompromised hosts including critical care, burns, cystic fibrosis and solid organ (lung, heart and kidney) and stem cell transplant recipients. 

People who inject drugs (PWID) are a cohort at risk of acute infections requiring hospitalisation, their complications often incur longer admissions and they are readmitted more frequently.  Inclusion Health  will be run as a 2 year pilot with the aim of improving health outcomes in PWID admitted for treatment of actue infections.   A multidisciplinary team will be established and include an Infectious Diseases Specialist, Clinical Nurse Consultant and a Lived Experience Worker/s.  The team will work in partnership and collaborate with a range of services; Ward 7 West, Infectious Diseases treating team, HITH, Addictions, Mental Health, Integrated Hepatitis C nurses and with a range of community based partners and service providers.  

The Role

The Lived Experience Worker will be a key member of the team working to engage patients and ensuring they are central in the development of their care plan.  They will support patient engagement with their broader health care team.  The Lived Experience Worker will be a key contact point for the broader care team involved in the patients care.  They will be a key advocate for the patient. 

The Lived Experience Worker will work closely with patients within the ward environment to plan/implement diversional activities to reduce challenges faced by PWID staying in an acute hospital environment.  They will be a key contact point where patients discharge against medical advice or transfer their care into the community.  The support provided will be client led and will recognise that those with lived experience have unique skills to support engagement in care. 

Experience and Qualifications Required

  • AOD Specific qualification equivalent to Certificate IV in Alcohol and Other Drug studies. 
  • Experience working in with people with active drug and alcohol issues or a relevant clinical area or social service
  • Minimum one year in recovery (out of treatment). 
  • A current Victorian Drivers Licence is essential.
