This is a 12-month appointment accredited by the Australian Orthopaedic Association in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, commencing August 2025.

The successful applicant will be exposed to a wide variety of surgical procedures, discussion forums, and multidisciplinary meetings, and includes managing pre-operative and post-operative care in both trauma and elective orthopaedic conditions.

The Alfred is one of the major Victorian trauma service providers, treating approximately half of all Victorian trauma cases.  It receives the greatest number of trauma cases of any hospital in Australasia and is a national leader in clinical care and research in this area. The Department of Trauma Surgery provides state-of-the-art emergency trauma and critical care for injured patients 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.  Almost 2400 trauma patients are admitted annually, with over 800 of these patients classed as major trauma. Most of these patients sustain orthopaedic injuries, which are referred to the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery for management including specialised expertise in complex pelvic, spinal, and lower limb reconstructive surgery.

The Alfred also has a co-located dedicated elective centre called The Alfred Centre which provides additional protected bed capacity for a busy elective program that provides the full range of elective orthopaedic surgical procedures for the local community.Involvement in clinical research is actively encouraged.

There are two orthopaedic teams. The Fellow has duties in both with a two-thirds trauma component. The trauma component involves general exposure with a particular emphasis on the management of pelvic and acetabular fractures. Besides this exposure to complex revision hip and knee replacement surgery is also provided. The Fellow participates in clinical management, including ward, outpatients, fracture clinics, and operating sessions. The Fellow also participates in the on-call roster. There is also opportunity for active involvement in teaching and clinical research.

The fellowship offers a unique experience in the management of patients with multiple injuries and the surgical treatment of pelvic and acetabular fractures.
