The Department

The MSBase Foundation is an independent not-for-profit organisation that owns and operates a unique international collaborative registry - The MSBase Registry. MSBase is designed for clinicians working in the field of multiple sclerosis (MS) and other neuroimmunological diseases (NIDs).

The MSBase Foundation supports Registry members by providing freely available data-entry tools, scientific and governance support. The Registry commenced in 2004 and has accumulated over 80,000 patient records from forty countries, and is the largest organised global repository of longitudinal, 'real-world' MS patient data. The Registry aims to advance collaborative outcomes research to better understand neuroimmunological diseases and to improve healthcare for those living with MS or other NIDs.

The MSBase Operations team consists of seven staff who support the daily operational, financial and IT activities of the business, and are led by a highly motivated and dedicated Managing Director and Chief Operating Officer, who are also practising neurologists.

The MSBase office is housed in the Monash Central Clinical School (CCS), located on level 6 of the Alfred Centre. The CCS is a centre for clinical and biomedical research and education and a core hub for translational research and medicine, covering a great breadth of subject areas.

The Role

The Head of Finance (HoF) will be responsible for the efficient and smooth running of financial matters, contract management, insurance, rish and the annual MSBase audit.

Reporting to the Managing Director and Chief Operating Officer, the successful candidate will lead and supervise the MSBase bookkeeper. The HoF will also be responsible for meeting the ongoing obligations and annual reporting requirements of the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC).

The HoF will work closely with the appointed external accountants to draft the quarterly financial reports. They will present the reports and supporting information to the board to ensure sound governance. They will also liaise with the auditors to ensure a successful audit and will present the findings of the audit to the board annually.

MSBase is an international organisation and as such, we are looking for a team player who has the flexibility and willingness to attend after-hours teleconferences, as necessary. The HoF should also be willing and able to travel internationally from time to time for meetings, including the annual ECTRIMS conference.

The role requires a high level of skill and experience in financial management, contract lifecycle management, compliance, audit, and risk. The HoF should have excellent communication and leadership skills, exercise critical thinking, excellent judgement and be highly organised and driven for success.


  • An appropriate qualification and a minimum of 5-years’ experience in financial or commercial management role.
  • Familiarity with Government statutory regulations (a background in Not-for-profit and/or health sectors is desirable).
  • Demonstrated experience in contract life-cycle management, compliance, audit, and risk.
  • Ability to ensure a successful audit in liaison with selected auditors.
  • Strong financial management skills and knowledge in the preparation of budgets, forecasting, analysis, and review of quarterly and annual financial statements prepared by the accountants.

  • Excellent communication and leadership skills
