The Department

The Department of Clinical Haematology includes the Australian Centre for Blood Diseases (ACBD). ACBD is one of the country’s largest blood-related research and clinical centres. The primary mission of the ACBD is to improve the understanding of blood-related diseases and to provide world-class services and treatments for patients afflicted with such diseases. The Centre evolved from a highly successful research program combined with a concentration of clinical activities in blood diseases at the Monash Department of Medicine. The Centre is a part of the Central Clinical School of Monash’s Faculty of Medicine, Nursing & Health Sciences. It is located at the Alfred Medical Research & Education Precinct (AMREP) in Prahran. The co-location of the research activities with other AMREP partners, including the Baker Institute, coupled with the establishment of a fully integrated haematology consortium between Bayside Health, Southern Health and Eastern Health represents a major step forward in advancing the objectives of the ACBD

The Role

The Research Officer will work in the laboratory of Professor Andrew Perkins at the ACBD of Monash University and The Alfred Hospital. The overall aim of the position is to "Improve Health outcomes for patients with Myelofibrosis", a 5 year MRFF funded grant funding by the NHMRC. The job involves interrogation of new drivers of blood cancers (MPNs) and new mechanisms by which JAK-STAT signaling transforms blood cells. The work will involve genomics assays (ChIP-seq, RNA-seq, ATAC-seq), generation of pre-clinical models of disease (CRISPR/Cas9 gene-edited mice and xenografts), analysis of primary samples from patients (RNA-seq, RT-PCR), FACS, drug assays. The successful candidate will be part of a laboratory of 8 staff and integrate closely with the clinical genomics and clinical trials components of the ACBD. There will be a component of clinical sample preparation and analysis as part of a biobank in MPNs and as part of companion molecular studies for early phase clinical trials.


  • A tertiary qualification in a relevant field, or
  • Substantial relevant skills and work experience, or
  • An equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training
  • Experience in handling of primary human samples, FACS, tissue culture would be of value
  • Experience in molecular biology and/or genomics techniques would be of value
