The Department
The Alfred Cancer Program is responsible for the overall delivery of a comprehensive cancer service which involves a number of clinical areas and units including; Medical Oncology, Clinical Haematology, Bone Marrow Transplant, Apheresis, State-wide Haemophilia Service, Radiation Oncology, Palliative Care and the Victorian Melanoma Service. Alfred Health delivers a comprehensive suite of services which involves a range of diagnostic services, surgical, radiation and oncology therapies and the recently introduced Integrative Oncology Unit and Wellness Centre for cancer patients.
Join Our Team: Part-Time Social Worker Wanted for Integrative Oncology Unit!
Are you a dedicated and compassionate Grade 2 Social Worker with a passion for cancer care? We have a unique opportunity for you to make a meaningful impact in the lives of patients at Alfred Cancer. Our Integrative Oncology Unit is committed to providing comprehensive care that addresses the physical, emotional, and psychological needs of our patients. We combine supportive cancer treatment with holistic approaches to support our patients' well-being throughout their journey.
The Role
As a Grade 2 Social Worker in our team, you'll play a crucial role in supporting patients and their families through their cancer care journey. You will be responsible for the provision of social work services to patients and their families/significant others including assessing the psycho-social functioning of patients, counselling, providing information on resources and services and facilitating effective patient discharge and community care. The successful candidate will also contribute significantly to the development of evidence-based holistic and patient-centred approaches to care in which ‘health and wellbeing’ is the key focus. You'll have the opportunity to:
- Provide individual and group counselling to patients and their families.
- Develop and implement meditation and relaxation interventions to help manage stress and improve quality of life.
- Collaborate with our integrative oncology multidisciplinary team to create and execute patient supportive care plans.
- Offer resources and support for coping with the emotional and practical challenges of cancer treatment.
- Contribute to education programs designed for patients and their families
What We’re Looking For
- Experience in Cancer Care: Previous experience working in oncology settings, with a deep understanding of the unique needs of cancer patients.
- Meditation and Relaxation Expertise: Skills and knowledge in meditation and relaxation techniques to enhance patient care and support.
- Empathy and Passion: A genuine commitment to helping others, with a compassionate approach to patient care.
- Team Player: Ability to work collaboratively with a diverse team of healthcare professionals.

Experience and Qualifications Required
- Approved degree in Social Work and evidence of eligibility for membership of the Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW).
- Advanced social work skills and experience as evidenced by 4 or more years experience (minimum of 3) and a demonstrated commitment to ongoing professional development.
- Experience in providing social work services to individuals with serious and chronic health conditions, preferably cancer/oncology services
- Knowledge of trauma responses and the psychosocial impact that a cancer diagnosis and treatment has on this patient population and individual coping.
- Experience in the development, implementation, facilitation and evaluation of evidence-based interventions, including meditation, relaxation techniques, and other supportive therapies to complement cancer treatment.
