The Department

The Pharmacy services operate across all Alfred Health sites and are well recognised nationally and internationally for high quality, innovative, patient-focused services, education and training programmes as well as significant research output. The Pharmacy Department also plays a pivotal role in managing the electronic medication management system within our comprehensive electronic medical record (Cerner), with an advanced level of integration linking this to the Pharmacy Dispensing (iPharmacy) and Automated Medication Storage systems (Omnicell). This is complemented by a strong clinical presence and a Centre for Medicine Use and Safety program to achieve a considered, safe and financially responsible approach to medication management within Alfred Heath.

THE ROLE

In this position, you will primarily work across the Medication Formulary Management portfolio including the Medicines Information Service, which complement each other. You will support the Formulary Manager in a range of activities, whilst also been a member of Medicines Information Service team. You will require a strong clinical background across a broad range of specialties and the ability to liaise with and communicate effectively with health care professionals at all levels.

Formulary Support

  • To assist with the evaluation and documentation of  non-formulary requests (IPU) for individual patients.
  • Deputise for the Formulary Manager when on leave (ADOs and annual leave), including assessing IPU requests and identifying areas for clarification with DTC, including  previous treatment, cost, quantifiable end-point, compliance with guidelines and liaising with Pharmacists and their Leads.
  • For formulary medications, utilise MI and clinical skills described above to prepare and evaluate formulary applications.
  • Monitoring of all aspects of medication use.
  • Assist in the preparation of material for the Drug and Therapeutics Committee.

Medicines Information

  • Provision of accurate, evidence-based answers to medicine information queries in a timely manner. Lead the development and updating of pharmacy-owned guidelines in collaboration with the Senior Clinical Pharmacists and Formulary Manager.
  • Assist with the development or revision of non-pharmacy owned guidelines on request.
  • Provision of support to the Digital Health team on request for selected projects e.g. smart pump dataset, drug interactions alerts.
  • Play an active role in developing and maintaining all aspects of the Medicines Information Service.

YOUR SKILLS

  • Ability to demonstrate leadership and decision making skills
  • Ability to search and analyse medical and paramedical literature
  • Ability to analyse and review clinical and financial data in a number of formats
  • Advanced presentation and writing skills
  • Stakeholder engagement with senior clinicians and obtain consensus decisions
  • Advanced computer skills including database and excel management
  • Must have a strong commitment in patient care, continuing education, personal professional development and research

QUALIFICATIONS and EXPERIENCE

  • Registered pharmacist with AHPRA Pharmacy Board of Australia
  • Relevant post graduate qualifications, preferably Masters degree level or recognised specialisation qualifications relevant to the position.
  • Extensive hospital pharmacy experience in clinical services.
  • Experience in the critical evaluation of medical literature.
  • Superior administrative and organisational skills, and exhibit the ability to work and communicate effectively with pharmacy staff and other health professionals.
