Alfred Health

Alfred Health is a leader in health care delivery, improvement, research and education. We are the main provider of health services to people living in the inner southeast suburbs of Melbourne, from ambulatory to inpatient and home and community-based services.

About the Department

Alfred Mental and Addiction Health (AMAH) provides specialist multidisciplinary mental health care to people with severe mental illness.  The Program has a primary responsibility for residents of inner South-eastern metropolitan Melbourne, but also runs a number of statewide services, and cares for all patients seeking its assistance.

The newly developed AMAH Hospital and Emergency Department combines Adult Inpatient, Consultation-Liaison and Emergency Psychiatry, and Addiction Health Services.  The AMAH Hospital and Emergency Services Department will embed trauma-informed approaches throughout the continuum of care starting at the point of entry and extending through assessment and treatment to transition out of specialist care, either in the community or the hospital setting.

About the Role

Alfred Health is seeking a new Service Head, Adult Inpatient Psychiatry. The Service Head provides clinical leadership across the two Alfred adult mental health inpatient units, in collaboration with nursing, allied health and lived experience leaders, and is a key member of the AMAH Executive.  We are looking for an experienced psychiatrist with a strong commitment to excellent patient-centred care of mental health inpatients. The Service Head will continue to establish key reform principles within the inpatient units, including supported decision making and least restrictive practice, with an emphasis on reduction of restrictive interventions. Working with a lead psychiatrist on each ward, they will also provide support and supervision to senior and junior medical staff across the two wards, including supervision of RANZCP trainees.

This is a Full Time position, with 30% non-clinical time.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Medical practitioners registered with AHPRA without conditions, undertakings, or reprimands.
  • Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists.
  • Advanced Training or Membership of the Faculty of Adult Psychiatry or established experience and expertise in Adult Psychiatry.
  • Have demonstrable relevant knowledge and experience in psychiatry in multiple settings including inpatient settings.
  • Meet Alfred Health requirements for credentialing and scope of practice in Psychiatry.
  • Have experience in teaching and an involvement in research are desirable.
