The School

The School of Translational Medicine (STM) is the FMNHS’s leading school for biomedical and clinical research and education, offering undergraduate and postgraduate study programs. STM is primarily located at the Alfred Hospital Precinct, with sites at Peninsula Health, and Cabrini Hospital.
The Department of Neuroscience, Monash University is involved in a broad range of basic, clinical and translational research and research training. The Department includes 28 major research groups focussed on epilepsy, stroke, traumatic brain injury, MS, brain cancers, movement disorders, and Alzheimer’s disease and other cognitive disorders. The Department has over 200 staff and students, including 66 PhD students.

The Role

The Research Assistant will work within the Alfred Health Neurosciences Department and also across in the School of Translational Medicine (STM), Monash University located in the Alfred Centre. This Research Assistant position will contribute to the goals of the Sivathamboo (SUDEP) group. Specifically, they will:

  • Conduct research relating to sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP), autonomic function in epilepsy, and cardiorespiratory function in epilepsy.
  • Collect and analyse clinical, demographic, physiological such as EEG, imaging, ECG information, and video.
  • Organisational and time management capabilities; Ability to prioritise tasks, show initiative, and solve complex problems independently.
  • Ability to solve complex problems by using discretion and innovation and the ability to troubleshoot problems as they arise.
  • Well-developed planning and organisational skills, with the ability to prioritise multiple tasks, and set and meet deadlines
  • A demonstrated awareness of the principles of confidentiality, privacy, and information handling.
  • A demonstrated capacity to work in a collegiate manner with other staff in the workplace.
  • Demonstrated computer literacy and proficiency in the production of high-level work using software such as Profusion EEG and sleep software and specified Alfred Health software programs, with the capability and willingness to learn new packages as appropriate.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent teamwork capabilities.

Key Selection Criteria

Essential                 

  • Undergraduate Degree in Science, Medicine, Biomedical Science or equivalent health discipline.
  • Previous experience working in epilepsy research.
  • Previous experience in understanding of the principles and methods of research, in particular adhering to study protocols, ethics and governance, and good clinical practice guidelines.
  • Previous experience in data entry, data collation and keeping systems for compilation and storage of data, with awareness of confidentiality requirements.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to interact professionally with a wide range of personnel in the health and university divisions.
  • Excellent organisational skills, attention to detail and data management skills that ensure the smooth delivery of study outcomes while managing competing demands and conflicting deadlines.
  • Demonstrated high level of competency with Microsoft Office including software packages Word, Excel, Power point, and Endnote.
  • Demonstrated capacity to work both within a team as well as independently with some supervision where required, within a framework of broad guidelines and procedures.
  • Capacity to participate in patient centred research approaches and have a basic understanding of patient and care giver needs and values.
  • Work with the broader team and support the PhD students and clinical researchers as directed by lead of Sivathamboo Research Group

Desirable        

  • A Postgraduate Degree, preferably in Clinical Research, Health Sciences, Biomedical Sciences or equivalent.
  • Experience in RedCAP database creation and management.
  • Experience in epilepsy and SUDEP research.
  • Publications in peer reviewed journals.
