About us

Alfred Mental & Addiction Health (AMAH) is responsible for the operation of services, which focus on people with a severe mental illness residing in the Inner South Eastern area of Melbourne.

The single most important goal of Alfred Mental & Addiction Health is to create an environment that facilitates clinical recovery, supports individual recovery efforts and strives to minimise service system barriers to the recovery process.

The IPU is made up of 58 beds distributed across two wards and includes a state-wide psychiatric intensive care unit (PICU). Each ward has a full range of nursing, allied health and medical staff.

What you’ll be doing

This position contributes to inpatient and family care within the Alfred Acute Psychiatric Inpatient Unit and forms part of a multi-disciplinary team maintaining close links with the wider Adult Mental Health and addictions service, including the wider community services.  

The candidate will work within the Multi-Disciplinary team and will be accountable for the provision of effective Mental Health Social Work practice and services to consumers, carers and the community, using individual and group evidence-based practice. Building on partnerships between mental health services and the community by networking and liaison with carers/families and community services will be a necessary and significant part of the role.

Social Worker in Mental Health provides a range of services include:

  • Provision of psychosocial functional assessments
  • Evidence based psychological strategies according to consumer need
  • Provision of family and individual therapy
  • Building and maintaining partnerships and networks
  • Crisis Interventions, Discharge, Wellness and safety plans
  • Provide learning environment to graduates and students
  • Provide leadership, mentoring and/ or supervision to junior staff
  • Provide structured group work suitable for acute settings

About you

  • Approved tertiary qualifications and eligibility for membership with Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW)
  • Relevant clinical experience with experience in social work within a mental health-based context
  • Relevant post graduate training in mental health (desirable)
  • Australian working rights and full Covid-19 vaccination
  • Be willing to undergo a Background Check
