The Department

The Social Work Department operates in accordance with the philosophy and goals of The Alfred.  A focus on quality of life and participation in care is a primary goal of the Department. Social Work aims to identify and address the psychosocial impacts of illness and hospitalisation for patients and their families by providing a range of services which increase quality of life and participation in care. Social Work also assists patients and their families with a smooth transition from hospital to home.


The Role 

We are seeking a Social Worker to join our Social Work team at Alfred Health. You will have relevant hospital experience and be able to work within a strong multidisciplinary team. To be successful, you will need to have a good understanding of working and supporting patients with a chronic illness.  Experience in counselling and adjustment to illness and hospitalisation is essential for this role.  You will need to exhibit an understanding of social work theories and apply them to hospital practice. It will be essential to have a sound understanding of complex discharge planning within an acute hospital setting. The successful candidate will need excellent communication skills to collaborate with patients, families, other disciplines, and community stakeholders. The successful candidate will need to posess strong advocacy skills for this role. 


The Alfred Health Cystic Fibrosis (CF) Service is the adult service for people with CF in Victoria.  The Social Worker is responsible for the provision of advanced social work services to patients and their families/significant others primarily to the CF Unit, the role involves both outpatient and inpatient work. Participation in service programs such as the transfer of patients from the Royal Children’s Hospital to the Alfred is an important part of the role. Flexibility to work within any of the Social work departments service areas is also essential whether that be specified units on either a permanent or temporary basis. The worker will also be expected to be an active contributor to team and departmental activities, such as quality improvement programs and development of service initiatives within the specialty area, and priority allocation which may include priority triage for un allocated units and leave cover. Supervision of junior staff and students will also be expected.  Development and maintenance of community linkages are also important in this position.



  • Applicants must hold a Bachelor Degree in Social Work
  • Applicants must have an understanding of the psychosocial issues associated within a hospital setting 
  • Applicants will need to have had experience in working within a hospital setting 


It is vital that the successful candidate has experience in working within an Electronic medical record.
