About the Team

Neurology has long been recognised as one of the major clinical and research strengths of Alfred Health. Core activities of the department include:
The Neurology Unit at The Alfred is recognised as one of the premier clinical neurology departments. There are specialist clinics (and consultants with particular expertise) in Movement Disorders, Neuropathy, Headache, Multiple Sclerosis and Neuroimmunology, Epilepsy, Stroke and Neurogenetics. There is an active Neurophysiology Department providing EEG, EMG, Evoked potential studies and Tremor analysis and a strong neuropsychology service. 

About the Role

We invite applications for this exciting Clinical Research Nursing role in the MS and Neuroimmunology Unit at Alfred Health. The MSNI Clinical Research Nurse provides an opportunity to join a dynamic team of MS and neuroimmunology clinicians focused on delivering excellent care to people with MS and Neuroimmunological disorders at Alfred Health, Department of Neurology. The incumbent will work closely with a Clinical Research Coordinator, Senior MSNI nurse consultant, Ethics and Admin Officers, Neurologists and Scientists. The incumbent will act as a project manager and study coordinator for a portfolio of phase 1-4 trials in MS and Neuroimmunology alongside a team of two to three additional study coordinators. The post holder will work closely with people with MS and Neuroimmunological disorders at all Alfred Health campuses. The position is ideal for someone experienced in clinical research. The position is for 3-4 days a week, with some opportunity for flexibility with the timetable. 

Duties

  • Attend MSNI Clinics to coordinate research studies, recruit and retain participants. 
  • At times, there may be the requirement to assist with patient care, assist medical and other nursing staff 
  • Respond to patient enquiries, provide phone and/or email support to clients in need as it relates to trials. 
  • Assist with data entry into clinical databases (MDS, redCAP and others) used in the MSNI clinics and conducting clinical audits. 
  • Assist the Senior MSNI nurse Consultant as required, with administrative duties relating to the research-related running of the MSNI service

Skills & Experience

Essential 

  • Registration as a Registered Nurse (Division 1) with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia 
  • Venipuncture, ECG and intravenous cannulation skills
  • Undertake a CASA Course every 2 years.
  • Obtain and maintain yearly Basic Life Support accreditation
  • Strong communication, interpersonal and organisational skills 
  • Strong and proven time management skills 
  • Have good working knowledge of MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Microsoft Outlook 
  • Ability to work independently with other services and departments in the hospital and community

Desirable 

  • Postgraduate qualification in health and/or management or working towards same 
  • Clinical knowledge regarding Multiple Sclerosis, Neuroimmunology and/or Neuroscience nursing 
  • Open, flexible and innovative 
  • Support and develop undergraduate students, nursing and associated staff
