About the team

AMAH provides specialist psychiatric clinical care to people with severe mental illness.  The Program has a primary responsibility for residents of inner South-eastern metropolitan Melbourne, but cares for all patients seeking its services. 

The Alfred Mental and Addiction Health Program (AMAH) comprises:

  • AMAH Hospital and Emergency Services (HES)
  • AMAH Adult Community and Older Adult Services (ACOAS)
  • AMAH Infant, Child & Youth Services including Headspace (HI-CYMHS)
  • AMAH State-wide Services

About the role

This position is established within the Consultation Liaison & Emergency Psychiatry program within the integrated Emergency Psychiatry team. 
The CLE team consists of:

The Consultation Liaison (CL) nurse is a clinical position providing psychiatric nursing consultation services to The Alfred Hospital. This pivotal position will work within the CL nursing team and the broader CL arm to support the hospital in managing mental health issues experienced by patients within the hospital.

The CL nurse will provide expert psychiatric assessment and assist staff with the management of patients who are at risk of potential aggression and behavioural disturbance. The incumbent will ensure nursing staff are supported and guided to effectively interact, manage and empathically care for patients with mental health issues. They will take responsibility for developing nursing strategies in collaboration with primary nurses and other clinical staff to manage mental health issues.

The CL Nurses and other CL team members will ensure all patients receive the care required to effectively manage their mental health or behavioural issues. They will work collaboratively with multidisciplinary colleagues in providing clinical assessment, patient management advice and ongoing evaluation of care.

The position is a resource for nursing staff to assist with the care and management of patients with a psychiatric disorder or behavioural disturbance due to other causes and ensures that this aspect of the care plan is adhered to, providing advocacy as required.

The CL Nurse is required to work a minimum of 2 weekend shifts (0800-1630hrs Saturday and Sunday) in a one-month roster. On these shifts in conjunction with the rostered medical staff, the CL nurse will be responsible for ensuring the review of all current CL patients and in particular all patients on Level 4 observations. The CL nurse will adjust the care plans as required and in collaboration with the psychiatric registrar on duty, attend to any new referrals.

One member of the CL Nursing team will be rostered each day (Mon – Friday) to attend every Code Grey and Code Black across the hospital, excluding the Emergency Department and the mental health units. They will provide expert advice and use strategies to respond effectively to behaviours of concern.

KEY CAPABILITIES

Specific to this role:

  • Advanced level of clinical expertise in psychiatric nursing
  • Demonstrated expert knowledge and understanding of psychiatric issues within the general ward setting
  • Demonstrated expert knowledge of psychiatric risk assessment
  • Highly developed interpersonal and communication skills
  • Critical thinking and problem solving skills
  • Proven ability and skills to work within multidisciplinary teams and alongside multiple teams
  • Participates in internal and external incident and disaster management when required. 
  • Be familiar with and adhere to relevant professional codes of ethics and relevant legislation, in particular the MHWBA 2024 and the Guardianship & Administration Act (1986).

QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

Essential                  

  • Registration with the Nurses & Midwifery Board via AHPRA with tertiary qualifications in mental health nursing – post graduate diploma equivalent as a minimum.
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience working in an acute setting post registration
  • Ability to communicate and work collaboratively with a wide range of stakeholders           
  • Victorian driver’s license           

 Desirable        

  • Experience working across a general health setting i.e. CL Psychiatry Nursing
  • Higher degree in a relevant field or working towards highly regarded
