The Department
The Office of Ethics & Research Governance (“Office”), based at The Alfred hospital campus, provides administrative support, advice and information relating to research activities at Alfred Health. Services include management of all matters relating to review by the Alfred Hospital Ethics Committee; site specific authorisation of applications reviewed by an external Ethics Committee under National Mutual Acceptance (NMA); approval, authorisation and surveillance of research projects involving humans; monitoring of research performance; support for the development of policies and research initiatives; preparing reports for internal committees and external bodies and; facilitating submissions for stakeholder consultations.
The Office provides executive support to the Alfred Hospital Ethics Committee and its subcommittees, the Research Review Committee and the General Ethical Issues Sub-committee, and to the Director of Research.
Alfred Health has a responsibility to monitor research in accordance with the Australian Code for the Responsible Conduct of Research (2018) ‘the Code’ and the National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Human Research (2023).
To support the delivery of high-quality clinical trial services, the Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care developed the National Clinical Trials Governance Framework (NCTGF). The Office will assist in the implementation and integration of the NCTGF into the existing Clinical Governance Framework.
The Position Summary
This position involves support to the Director of Research and assistance to the Senior Research Governance Officer and Senior Manager, Office of Ethics & Research Governance, in all administrative duties associated with research governance matters for which the Director of Research, Senior Research Governance Officer and Senior Manager are responsible. This position will involve working under the direction of the Senior Research Governance Officer and Senior Manager, Office of Ethics & Research Governance.
The primary responsibility is to ensure that human research conducted by Alfred Health conforms to the requirements of the ‘the Code’, the National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Human Research (2023) and the NCTGF.
The position involves review of site-specific applications; review of changes to authorised research; monitoring of research performance; support for the development of standard processes and guidelines; maintenance of data to support reporting; training for researchers and assisting in the implementation of the NCTGF.
Regular communication with researchers, the Office and the Director of Research is also required.
Skills and Qualifications Required
- Tertiary qualifications in a scientific, medical science or bioethics field
- Experience in the health or research sector
- Administrative experience
- Time management capabilities
- Word processing, database, publishing and spreadsheet capabilities
- Personal integrity and discretion
- Strong understanding of research governance
- Effective time management and organisational skills
- Ability to work with equanimity and within time constraints
