LocationCaulfield Hospital
Positions1 Position
Job no: 68682
Category: Senior Medical, Visiting Medical Officer

Alfred Health

Alfred Health is a leader in health care delivery, improvement, research and education. We are the main provider of health services to people living in the inner southeast suburbs of Melbourne, from ambulatory to inpatient and home and community-based services.

About the Department

Alfred Health provides comprehensive specialist physical and mental healthcare to residents of Melbourne’s inner south, in addition to a range of state-wide services. Alfred Health is a leader in delivery of high-quality healthcare, research and training.

Alfred Mental & Addiction Health (AMAH) has a reputation for excellence and innovation in service delivery. The newly established AMAH Department of Adult and Older Adult Services (AOAS) combines AMAH Adult Mental Health and Caulfield Aged and Liaison Psychiatry Services.  AMAH AOAS will ensure that older adults continue to benefit from sub-specialist services while also gaining access to a wider range of existing and planned services in such areas as therapeutic care, addiction, psychological trauma, forensic, family violence and sub-acute services in line with the recommendations from the Royal Commission into Victoria’s Mental Health and the Victorian Mental Health and Wellbeing Act 2022.

The Caulfield Aged and Liaison Psychiatry Service (ALPS) encompasses an acute inpatient assessment unit (Baringa), a multidisciplinary Community Assessment Team that includes the Mobile Aged Psychiatry Service (MAPS) that provides community based care to the Inner South East Mental Health catchment area, and a Consultation & Liaison (CL) Service.

Baringa consists of 15 beds and is staffed on an interdisciplinary model with 24 hour nursing care. As it is a unit treating patients with acute conditions there is an expectation that patients will be discharged into more appropriate environments as soon as they are ready for discharge.

The Mobile Aged Psychiatry Service is essentially the front line of the mental health program.  The inter-disciplinary team undertakes primary functions of community based assessment, treatment and case management of older persons with mental health problems living in the Inner South East region of Melbourne.  The Consultation & Liaison service provides expert mental health care to inpatients at Caulfield Hospital and to off campus Transitional Care Program (TCP) facilities, and a dedicated team specific to the Acquired Brain Injury Unit.

About the Role

Applications are invited for a consultant psychiatrist in aged psychiatry to provide specialist psychiatrist input into Baringa. The medical specialist will be available for a total of 6 sessions weekly (48 hrs/fortnight).
