Alfred Care Group is seeking an experienced and motivated pharmacist to join the Mental Health and Addiction Team as Senior Pharmacist. This is a unique opportunity to join one of the most progressive hospital pharmacy services in the country and continue to build and develop the mental health and addiction services in a supportive environment. 

About the Department & Team 

The Pharmacy Department works closely with patients, their family and other health services to provide high level pharmaceutical care. Our departments' priorities are to provide information on medication safety, cost-effective use of medication for patients and deliver specialised pharmacy expertise at important points of a patient's recovery or treatment process. Our pharmacists are recognised as essential members of all clinical teams, actively engaging in a unit and team-based care model involving ward rounds and collaborating closely with the multidisciplinary team to achieve excellent patient care outcomes. There are vast opportunities to engage in Advanced Scopes of Practice.

The Alfred Mental and Addiction Health (AMAH) Program provides specialist psychiatric clinical care to people with severe mental illness. The Program has a primary responsibility for residents of inner South-Eastern metropolitan Melbourne, but cares for all patients seeking its services. 

AMAH is comprised of four Departments:  

  • AMAH Hospital and Emergency Services (HES), including consultation-liaison (CL) Psychiatry, Emergency Psychiatry (CATT, HOPE, EPS) and the Adult Inpatient Psychiatry Units
  • AMAH Adult & Older Adult including navigations and continuing Care; adult rehabilitation and recovery; community addiction health; older adult mental health services; wellbeing services.  
  • AMAH Infant, Child & Youth Services (ICYAMHS), including headspace primary and early psychosis  
  • AMAH Statewide Services, including the Women’s Mental Health Service (WReN) at Ramsay Clinic, residential eating disorder services (RED-TC / Ngamai Wilam)  

Services are provided across various locations within Alfred Health including the Alfred Hospital in Prahran, Caulfield Hospital, various clinics across St Kilda, South Yarra, Armadale, Moorabbin as well as Alfred headspace services in multiple locations across Victoria.  

About the Role 

We are seeking an enthusiastic and motivated pharmacist with expertise in psychotropic medication management to provide progressive, advanced level, patient-centred care. Working closely with the Lead Pharmacist – AMAH, you will lead clinical services within a variety of portfolios in the service. To be successful, you will have excellent understanding of clinical practice approaches to supporting patients with complex mental health issues and/or training and experience working in mental health settings.  

You will work collaboratively with our existing AMAH Senior Pharmacists, Lead Pharmacist and the multidisciplinary team to achieve the best medication outcomes for patients, provide support and contribute to the overall Pharmacy Service across AMAH clinical areas as required.  

You will also provide medication management oversight, education, and governance including the monitoring of KPIs, reporting and medication safety activities across various AMAH Program areas.  

Key Skills

  • Ability to demonstrate leadership and decision-making skills
  • Demonstrated knowledge in pharmacotherapeutics in psychotropic and addiction medicine
  • Problem-solving and risk assessment abilities and the ability to use initiative
  • Excellent communication, time management skills with the ability to prioritise, plan and organise your work and deliver to deadlines
  • Ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams

Qualifications & Experience required

  • Registered pharmacist in Australia
  • Relevant post-graduate qualification in clinical pharmacy or equivalent
  • Demonstrated understanding of contemporary practice in hospital clinical pharmacy services, quality use of medicines and therapeutics  
  • Extensive experience in the provision of an advanced clinical pharmacy service in Mental Health and Addiction  
  • Completion of a specialist qualification, recognition in the field or completion or progression towards a PhD in a relevant area of study (highly desirable).
