The Department
The Alfred Hospital Intensive Care Unit is one of Australia's leading Intensive Care Units, admitting approximately 3,000 patients per annum. It is a 60 bedded ICU across 3 locations employing in excess of 600 nursing staff. It is a university attached quaternary referral centre, providing State Services for heart & lung transplantation (including paediatric lung transplantation), artificial heart technology, extra-corporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), burns and hyperbaric medicine. Over the last 5-years, The Alfred ICU has published more than 100 peer-reviewed publications per annum, including landmark papers in high-impact journals (such as the Lancet, NEJM, and JAMA). Researchers within the ICU are regarded as key opinion-leaders in critical care, and have mentored and/or supervised a large number of clinicians and/or higher research degree students in research projects. As such, The Alfred Intensive Care Unit offers a unique learning opportunity, whereby motivated staff can combine clinical work with a supportive research environment. This position is designed to be a key support for nursing staff who intend to undertake research projects, with assistance from our extensive research infrastructure.
The Role
The ICU Cinical Practice Research Nurse is a member of the Alfred Health ICU Nursing Team. The Fellowship offers an opportunity to conduct meaningful research that informs effective treatments in a real-life patient setting, and to pursue a higher education pathway. The main goal is to enable and facilitate nurse led research projects, so as to foster a culture of scientific enquiry, diversity, and patient-centred outputs. Specifically, the ICU Nursing Research Fellow is expected to foster and support research more broadly within the ICU, while undertaking specific self-initiated projects, in parallel with a higher-degree. Fellowship time will be specifically dedicated towards completing the outlined project, and will include such tasks as: completing a systematic review and/or meta-analysis of existing literature, protocol development, obtaining ethics and governance approvals, data collection and analysis, and manuscript preparation and submission. All potential projects must align with Alfred Health’s Strategic Plan, specifically to “Lead excellent, innovative and collaborative health research”, and “Deliver a modern and technologically-enabled work and hospital environment”. Experienced Alfred ICU clinician researchers will provide direct supervision and mentorship. Key deliverables will include presentation of the completed project at the Alfred Health Research Week, publication in a high impact peer-reviewed journal, and completion of the higher research degree. The ICU Nursing Research Fellow will work closely with ICU Nursing Leadership, and the ICU Research Team, and report to the Head of ICU Research.
