The Allied Health Department

Alfred Health Allied Health comprises a number of Allied Health disciplines that provide patient centred care across all clinical programs that operate at Alfred Health. The Allied Health team includes clinicians from Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy, Orthotics and Prosthetics, Speech Pathology, Social Work, Nutrition and Psychology (including Neuropsychology) and are supported by Allied Health Assistants. The Allied Health team works closely with the Nursing and Medical teams to provide a comprehensive and timely service to both inpatients and outpatients. Allied Health disciplines provide care that optimises physical, psychosocial, communication and cognitive functioning. The Allied Health Professional Practice Framework underpins the work of Allied Health in contributing to Alfred Health’s purpose.

 

The Position Summary

Sandringham Hospital provides healthcare in emergency, paediatrics, general medicine and in outpatient clinics. The hospital also delivers elective general and orthopaedic surgery. This Allied Health Assistant (AHA) role will be embedded within the inpatient adult general medicine and surgical services teams. The position is responsible for the implementation of individual interventions and/or therapy programs, as delegated by the treating therapists. The AHA will work as part of the multidisciplinary team to provide services that include provision of delegated therapies, provision of appropriate equipment and aids as prescribed by Allied Health Professionals (AHPs), assistance with paperwork and referrals to facilitate discharge, and liaison with external providers to obtain information to progress care or facilitate discharge. The AHA will also be responsible for administrative and clinical support functions, which assist with patient management and contribute to the effectiveness and efficiency of the team.

 

Skills and Qualifications Required

  • Completion of Certificate IV (Allied Health Assistance) from a registered training organisation, OR
  • Recognised equivalent qualification (as determined by the line manager):
  • Higher qualification in a relevant health science discipline at Diploma or Associate Diploma level
  • Certificate level qualification in a relevant health-related field
  • Overseas-trained Allied Health practitioner with a qualification at Diploma level or higher
  • Allied Health undergraduate student (in a relevant health science discipline) having successfully completed one year of study at minimum
  • Grade 3 applicants require minimum 3 years clinical experience as an AHA (or equivalent.)
