About Our Team  

The Alfred Pathology Service (APS) is key to providing integrated and timely diagnostic capabilities as part of the largest public pathology laboratory network in Victoria.  

Alfred Health supports the local community while addressing complex state-wide needs, including trauma, organ transplantation and HIV/AIDS diagnostics. APS conducts all pathology testing for multiple hospitals, offering a comprehensive range of services through five specialized units: Anatomical Pathology, Clinical Biochemistry, Haematology, Microbiology, and Human Molecular Pathology.

Alfred Health and Monash Health have established a partnership to deliver a pathology services at Western Health (WH), which includes, collection centres, branch laboratories at New Footscray Hospital and Sunshine Hospital and point-of-care services.  We are working in partnership to ensure we meet future demands and continue to provide high quality pathology services for our patients and the community across both health services.  

Position Summary  

The Specimen Reception Supervisor leads the day-to-day operations of the Specimen Reception Services, including Reception and Data Entry, Couriers, and sample preparation for testing and send-away specimens. The role ensures high standards of specimen reception and service delivery across multiple sites through effective leadership, staff development, training, and continuous improvement. Responsibilities include operational and administrative oversight, monitoring performance, reviewing and refining work roles, and investigating and addressing errors or complaints to maintain quality, efficiency, and compliance within Alfred/Monash Shared Pathology Services and Western Health laboratories and collection centres.

About You  

Qualifications Required:  

  • Successful completion of Year 12 or equivalent, with strong written and spoken English skills.
  • Tertiary qualification in laboratory procedures or biological sciences is desirable.

Experience and Skills Required:    

  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience in a pathology laboratory, including proven experience supervising a workgroup or team.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications. 
  • Proven experience in pathology specimen reception or similar laboratory environment, including supervising staff and managing workflows.
  • Strong leadership and mentoring skills, with ability to develop and deliver staff training and competency programs.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, with ability to engage stakeholders and provide clear instructions.
  • Knowledge of specimen handling, biological safety, infection control, OH&S, and pathology procedures.
  • High accuracy and attention to detail in data entry and use of laboratory information systems.
  • Strong organisational, time management, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to prioritise competing tasks.
  • Previous experience with the iPM and Cerner PathNet Millennium system is desirable.
