About us
AMAH provides specialist psychiatric clinical care to people with severe mental illness. The Program has a primary responsibility for residents of inner South-eastern metropolitan Melbourne but cares for all patients seeking its services.
The Carer Peer Trainee Program is based on the Peer Cadet model of experiential learning which is the process of learning and making meaning from direct experience and through reflection on doing. The program is an opportunity to develop skills and experience in carer peer work with a potential pathway into ongoing employment.
About you
- The Carer Peer Trainee will engage with a wide range of clinical settings which include acute inpatient, psychosocial rehabilitation and community out-patient across Alfred Mental and Addiction Health. As a Carer Peer Trainee, you will develop the skills, knowledge, and confidence you need to become a lived experience peer worker within mental health services.
- Supervision during the program will be provided by the Manager of Carer Lived Experience Workforce, with support from the Carer Lived Experience Educator. In addition, in your role as a Carer Peer Trainee, you will be provided with the opportunity to participate in group reflective practice supervision with other Carer Peer Workers.
- Carer Peer Trainees will develop personal qualities that are considered desirable to enable you to effectively work in the role of a lived experience carer peer worker within a large public mental health service.
- Required to learn by experience and demonstrate a number of discrete competencies in a supportive environment, trainees will grow their understanding, experience and knowledge in relation to working in a large clinical mental health service. You will gain an in-depth insight into the workings of how different service programs work together to put consumers, families, carers and supporters at the heart of everything we do.
- You will learn from a broad multidisciplinary team environment which encompasses both clinical and non-clinical roles, and lived experience peer workers, consumers, and their families/carers. As well as growing your understanding, experience and knowledge, you will build and develop a professional and social network with other carer peer networks.
As a Carer Peer Trainee, the program will also support you to contribute to work that will inform future service practices, raise community awareness and shape organisational culture.
