The Department

The Alfred Hyperbaric Service provides hyperbaric oxygen therapy to patients with a range of conditions including decompression illness, trauma, acute and chronic wounds, acute infections or side effects of radiotherapy. It offers a 24hrs a day, 7 days per week emergency service caring for divers and critically ill patients.

The Hyperbaric Technician works as part of a multi-disciplinary team with nurses, technicians, doctors, and administrative staff in caring for patients.

The Role

The Hyperbaric Technician’s primary role is to provide safe operation of the hyperbaric chamber(s) as requested by clinical staff. The Technician will also be expected to assist nursing staff to provide a safe and comfortable environment for patient’s pre, during and post treatment in the hyperbaric facility. This is an exciting opportunity exists to join Victoria's only public Hyperbaric service. The Hyperbaric Technician plays a vital role in patient and staff safety and oversees the operation of therapeutic clinical chamber operations. Working in a small technical and engineering team the role works closely with the clinical staff to deliver therapeutic hyperbaric services to emergency and non-emergency patients in Victoria. The ideal person will have a diving or engineering background, with previous experience operating a hyperbaric chamber an advantage but not essential (Clinical Hyperbaric chamber operator course provided as part of the role). The service operates for routine patient services Monday to Friday. Emergency service is provided 7 days per week, 365 days of the year. The successful applicant will participate in the roster for both the Monday to Friday routine hours, as well as the out-of-hours on-call roster.

The successful applicant will have strong communication skills and the ability to work within a small dynamic team.

 Qualifications and Experience Required

  • Experience with the operations and maintenance of at least some category of life support equipment
  • Experience with operating a hyperbaric chamber is preferable
  • Some experience with operational utilisation of voice and video monitoring and communications equipment
  • Practical diving and decompression safety management experience desirable
  • Familiarity with the healthcare sector desirable

Essential

  • Technical and problem-solving skill base demonstrated through prior training and/or employment in a relevant discipline such as a trade, military, emergency services, engineering, physiological or scientific field
  • Certificate or Associated Diploma in Applied Science, Laboratory Technology, Laboratory Operations, or equivalent Post Graduate Degree
  • Current Australian Diver Accreditation Scheme Chamber Operator Course or relevant International Marine Contractors Association accreditation

Desirable

  • Experience with the operations and maintenance of at least some category of life support equipment in either a hospital or offshore setting
  • Experience with operating a hyperbaric chamber is preferable
  • Experience with operational utilisation of voice and video monitoring and communications equipment
  • Practical diving and decompression safety management experience desirable
