Alfred Health

Alfred Health is a leader in health care delivery, improvement, research and education. We are the main provider of health services to people living in the inner southeast suburbs of Melbourne, from ambulatory, to inpatient and home and community-based services.

The Alfred Hospital is a quaternary hospital, as the Victorian state centre for heart and lung transplantation, advanced heart failure, mechanical circulatory support, burns and trauma.

The ICU runs an intensivist-led, in-house echocardiography service which consists of 9 DDU accredited ICU FCICM consultants, a cardiac sonographer and an echocardiography fellow. The service performs over 1200 studies per year, including both transthoracic & transoesophageal imaging, “Definity” contrast imaging, agitated saline (“bubble”) studies, mechanical support weaning studies, and vascular and lung ultrasound.

The echocardiography service holds weekly audit and education meetings, and has close links with the cardiology and cardiac anaesthetic departments at the Alfred. All echocardiography consultants and fellows are instructors on the basic and advanced Alfred echocardiology courses held each year. There is a comprehensive basic echocardiography education program for the ICU registrars which is led by the echocardiography fellow and run weekly.

The echocardiography fellow position is generally a 12-month appointment, and the fellow will participate in audits, case review and consultant meetings. The position is primarily an imaging fellowship; however, there is a small clinical component to enable trainees to maintain their clinical skills. The fellow generally will complete a formal qualification such the DDU (Critical Care) during the 12-month appointment; supervision for other qualifications such as EDEC is also available. A basic level of scanning is a prerequisite for selection and fellows have typically completed a basic course and performed at least 30 FCU studies prior to commencing.

The position is for a 12-month duration and commences in February 2025.

Shortlisted applicants will be asked to prepare a 5 minute presentation as part of their interview.
