The Department

The School of Translational Medicine (STM) is the FMNHS’s leading school for biomedical and clinical research and education, offering undergraduate and postgraduate study programs. STM is primarily located at the Alfred Hospital Precinct, with sites at Peninsula Health, and Cabrini Hospital.

STM, along with the School of Public Health and Preventative Medicine (SPHPM) form the Sub-Faculty of Translational Medicine and Public Health.

The Department of Neurology, Alfred Health has long been recognised as one of the major clinical and research strengths of Alfred Health. Core activities of the department include:

1. Clinical services: The Neurology Unit at The Alfred is recognised as one of the premier clinical neurology departments. There are specialist clinics (and consultants with particular expertise) in Movement Disorders, Neuropathy, Headache, Multiple Sclerosis, Epilepsy, Stroke and Neurogenetics.
2. Research: The Department currently is involved in both translational research and clinical research in clinical trials. Clinical research, including clinical trials and observational practice, are closely integrated with the clinical services of the Department - enhancing clinical care outcomes, treatment options for our patients, and promoting innovation and advances in neurological practice.
3. Education and training: to both undergraduate and postgraduate medical and science students and advanced trainees in neurology.
4. Commercialisation and industry engagement: including commercialisation of discoveries emanating from the basic and clinical research program, and engagement with industry to trial and develop advances in neurological treatment.

The Role

The Research Assistant position will contribute to the research activities of the Sivathamboo Research Group, based within the Department of Neuroscience, School of Translational Medicine, and the Alfred Health Comprehensive Epilepsy Program. The group conducts human clinical research focused on improving outcomes for people with epilepsy, including studies involving wearable devices, pharmaceutical interventions, and other clinical trials. This entry-level position would suit either someone with clinical experience who is looking to transition into a research role, or someone with prior research experience seeking to further develop their skills in clinical research.

Skills and Experience

Essential

• Undergraduate Degree in Science, Medicine, Biomedical Science or equivalent health discipline.
• Previous experience working in a clinical or research setting.
• Ability to interact professionally with a wide range of personnel in the health, university and private sector divisions.

Desirable

• A Postgraduate Degree in Health Sciences, Biomedical Sciences or equivalent.
• Previous experience in understanding of the principles and methods of research
• Previous experience in an epilepsy, sleep/respiratory or cardiology clinical or research setting.

Key Capabilities

• Capacity to participate in patient centred research approaches and have a basic understanding of patient and care giver needs and values.
• Excellent organisational skills, attention to detail and data management skills that ensure the smooth delivery of study outcomes
• Demonstrated capacity to work both within a team as well as independently with some supervision (as required)
