The Department

The Office of Ethics & Research Governance (“Office”), based at The Alfred hospital campus, provides administrative support, advice and information relating to research activities at Alfred Health. Services include management of all matters relating to review by the Alfred Hospital Ethics Committee; site specific authorisation of applications reviewed by an external Ethics Committee under National Mutual Acceptance (NMA); approval, authorisation and surveillance of research projects involving humans; monitoring of research performance; support for the development of policies and research initiatives; preparing reports for internal committees and external bodies and; facilitating submissions for stakeholder consultations.

 

The Office provides executive support to the Alfred Hospital Ethics Committee and its subcommittees, the Research Review Committee and the General Ethical Issues Sub-committee, and to the Director of Research.

 

Alfred Health has a responsibility to monitor research in accordance with the Australian Code for the Responsible Conduct of Research (2018) ‘the Code’ and the National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Human Research (2023).

 

To support the delivery of high-quality clinical trial services, the Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care developed the National Clinical Trials Governance Framework (NCTGF). The Office will assist in the implementation and integration of the NCTGF into the existing Clinical Governance Framework.

 

The Position Summary

This position is an ongoing position providing support to the Ethics Committee and assistance to the Senior Manager, Ethics & Research Governance, in all administrative duties associated with matters for which the Committee and the Manager are responsible. This position will involve working under the direction of the Senior Manager.

 

Responsibilities will include: screening of research submissions to the Ethics Committee; preparing for, attending and preparing minutes of monthly and other committee meetings; maintaining new and ongoing research projects via a database; processing protocol amendments; conducting induction sessions; and performing general secretarial and administrative duties as required.

 

Regular communication with researchers, including senior staff, is also required. The research under review is of a scientific nature.

 

Skills and Qualifications Required

  • Tertiary qualifications in a scientific, medical science or bioethics field
  • Experience in the health or research sector
  • Administrative experience
  • Time management capabilities
  • Word processing, database, publishing and spreadsheet capabilities
  • Personal integritydiscretion
