Bayside Health

Bayside Health is a public health service delivering high-quality care across every stage of life for close to 1.2 million people living in metropolitan Melbourne, the Mornington Peninsula, Koo Wee Rup, Bass Coast and Southern Gippsland. We have more than 15 main sites, including hospitals, centres and clinics that provide comprehensive care from welcoming newborns to supporting older people and a full range of services in between. More than 22,000 dedicated staff are focused on providing exceptional, equitable, and locally connected care through shared expertise, compassion, and a commitment to continuous growth. Education and training are central to staff development as we encourage all employees to strive and thrive. Bayside Health was formed following the merger of Alfred Health, Bass Coast Health, Gippsland Southern Health Service, Kooweerup Regional Health Service and Peninsula Health on 1 January 2026.

The Alfred Hospital Intensive Care Unit is a state of the art 68 bed unit that treats approximately 4000 patients per year. The Alfred ICU provides Victorian state services for heart and lung transplantation

(including paediatric lung transplant), advanced heart failure and mechanical circulatory support including extra-corporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) and impella, burns and hyperbaric medicine. The Alfred is one of two centres providing state services for trauma, HIV and bone marrow transplantation. In addition to the state services above The Alfred Hospital is a quaternary referral centre for a wide range of complex medical and surgical subspecialties.

The ICU runs an intensivist-led, in-house echocardiography service which consists of 10 CICM consultants with advanced echo qualifications (primarily DDU), a cardiac sonographer and an echocardiography fellow. The service performs over 1200 studies per year, including both transthoracic & transoesophageal imaging, agitated saline and microbubble contrast enhanced ultrasound, mechanical circulatory support weaning studies, and vascular and lung ultrasound.

The echocardiography service holds weekly Q&A and education meetings, and has close links with the cardiology and cardiac anaesthesia departments at the Alfred. Echocardiography consultants and fellow are instructors on the basic and advanced Alfred echocardiography courses held each year. There is a comprehensive basic echocardiography education program for the ICU registrars which is led by the echocardiography fellow and run weekly.

The echocardiography fellow participates in audits, case review and consultant meetings. The position is primarily an imaging fellowship; however, there is a small clinical component to enable trainees to maintain their clinical skills. The fellow generally will complete a formal qualification such the DDU (Critical Care) during the 12-month appointment; supervision for other qualifications such as EDEC is also available. A basic level of scanning is a prerequisite for selection and fellows have typically completed a basic course and performed at least 30 FCU studies prior to commencing.

The position is for a 12-month duration and commences in February 2027.

Shortlisted applicants will be asked to prepare a 5 minute presentation as part of their interview.
