About us

Alfred Mental & Addiction Health (AMAH) is responsible for the operation of services which focus on people with a mental illness residing in the Inner Southeastern area of Melbourne.

The Adult and Older Adult Service (AOAS) combines AMAH Adult Community Mental Health and Caulfield Aged and Liaison Psychiatry Services to provide comprehensive, person-centred support for adults and older adults. We offer a wide range of therapeutic, addiction, trauma-informed, and family violence services.

In line with the Royal Commission into Victoria’s Mental Health recommendations and the Victorian Mental Health and Wellbeing Act 2022, we have expanded our services to provide specialised expertise and broad-spectrum care, including pathways for substance use, rehabilitation, recovery, and trauma-focused care.

Our approach focuses on integrated treatment, education, peer support, care planning, and navigation, supporting individuals at every stage of their recovery journey.

You’ll have the opportunity to work in areas such as:

• Navigations and Continuing Care: Brief Intervention, Access and Intake, Continuing Care, Physical Health, and Family Services
• Adult Rehabilitation and Recovery: MSTS, CCU, PARC, HOPS, and SECU
• Aged/Older Adult Mental Health: MAPS, Caulfield Hospital Community Liaison, and inpatient units
• Wellbeing and Therapeutic Services: Psychological Trauma and Capacity Building initiatives

The Role

Consumer Peer Support Workers are integral members of the multidisciplinary team who possess expertise through a lived experience of mental health challenges. Through sharing wisdom from their own experiences, Consumer Peer Support Workers inspire hope and provide support to clients accessing clinical community mental health services.

As an integral and highly valued member of the multi-disciplinary team, the Consumer Peer Support Worker will provide formalised peer support and practical assistance to service users, to support them through their own unique recovery process. Within a relationship of mutuality and information sharing, they will promote choice, self-determination, hope and opportunities to seek or maintain socially valued roles and connections in their local communities.

Support and supervision of the Consumer Peer Support Workers is provided by the Peer Support Coordinator as well as through the Consumer Peer Support (Community of Practice) Supervision. Operationally the Consumer Peer Support Workers report to the Team Leader Lived Experience Peer Work.

About You

You will draw from your own lived experience of having a significant mental health challenge and the ability to use your experience to inspire hope and belief in recovery.

Essential

• Identified lived/living experience of mental health challenges.
• Demonstrated understanding of consumer peer work and recovery-oriented practice.
• Australian working rights and current influenza vaccination
• Current drivers licence
• Be willing to complete a police check

For Grade 3 appointment:

• Demonstrated experience working in a peer work role (typically 12 months or more).
• Demonstrated ability to work autonomously within peer scope of practice.

Desirable

• Certificate IV in Mental Health Peer Work.
• Intentional Peer Support Training
