The Department

The School of Translational Medicine (STM) is the FMNHS’s leading school for biomedical and clinical research and education, offering undergraduate and postgraduate study programs. STM is primarily located at the Alfred Hospital Precinct, with sites at Peninsula Health, and Cabrini Hospital.

STM, along with the School of Public Health and Preventative Medicine (SPHPM) form the Sub-Faculty of Translational Medicine and Public Health.

The Bariatric Surgery Registry is an established bi-national clinical quality registry that monitors the safety and efficacy of bariatric surgery across Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand Since beginning in 2012, the Registry has enrolled over 165,000 people who have had a bariatric procedure and has 213 surgeons and 150 hospitals contributing data. The Registry’s team is based in Monash University’s School of Translational Medicine (STM) at the Alfred Hospital campus. The Role

The Data Services Manager will be responsible for coordinating and managing the technical operations of the Bariatric Surgery Registry database, the web-based interfaced (BSR-i) and related data quality processes that are essential for ensuring completeness and quality of registry data. This role will also play a key role in extracting data for internal and external data access requests, data analysis and reporting. The Data Services Manager will work closely with the Registry’s Operations Manager and Executive Officer and will be responsible for the day-to-day supervision of the Registry’s Technical Support Officer(s).

Knowledge and Skills 

  1. Experience with relational databases and the generation of complete data queries using a database language such as SQL
  2. Experience in dealing with large, disparate datasets and using these data to undertake research activities in an academic environment. 
  3. High level of computer skills, including experience with data analysis tools and visualisation tools such as Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Access and Microsoft Power BI.  
  4. Demonstrated broad experience in leading, motivating and developing a team of professionals to deliver service excellence and continuous improvement
  5. Excellent organisational skills and ability to work independently to prioritise and delegate tasks to achieve agreed goals within timeframes and to required standards 
  6. Strong attention to detail  
  7. Active team player and excellent interpersonal skills including the ability to communicate complex information effectively with individuals at all levels.
  8. Experience working as part of a leadership team, contributing to setting strategic direction, undertaking strategic planning, providing advice and implementing initiatives to deliver on objectives
  9. Experience in and understanding of the healthcare industry and the higher education sector is desirable  

Education/Qualifications 

The appointee will have: 

  • Tertiary qualifications in a relevant discipline
  • Proven database and IT management expertise
  • An equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training
  • Health related knowledge an advantage
