The Department 
Alfred Pathology Service (APS) provides a comprehensive range of pathology testing, consultation services and collection services to clinicians and patients of Alfred Health. The Service has 5 units (Anatomical Pathology, Clinical Biochemistry, Haematology, Microbiology and Human Molecular Pathology), each headed by a Unit Head. APS has the core laboratory at The Alfred as well as a small local laboratory at Sandringham hospital. We are also in collaboration with Northern Hospital as of early 2019 providing support and some specialty testing.

Position Summary 
Grade 1 and 2 Scientists rotate through various sections of the laboratory and may need to rotate into the Sandringham laboratory if and when required. They are responsible for the processing of routine specimens according to established laboratory procedures and issuing of results relevant to these specimens. Their goal is to work as part of a team to achieve high quality work and produce accurate and timely reports.

In addition, Grade 1 and 2 Scientists may be responsible for the evaluation and accession of specimens and for day to day equipment maintenance, preparation of reagents, and stocktaking if required.
 

Experience and Qualifications Required 

Essential:

  • Formal Education: Bachelor Degree of Applied Science or equivalent.
  • Sound knowledge of laboratory haematology and its practical applications
  • Sound knowledge of clinical haematology and its practical applications
  • Sound knowledge of transfusion science and its practical applications
  • Sound knowledge of recent advances in clinical haematology 

Desirable:

  • Competence in interpreting haematological results and blood film examination
  • Competence in Flow Cytometry MRD and CAR-T processing
  • Competence in Immunology testing
  • Committed to the Mission and Values of Alfred Health.
