On 1 January 2026, Alfred Health will come together with Kooweerup Regional Health Service, Peninsula Health, Bass Coast Health and Gippsland Southern Health Service to create Bayside Health, a newly merged health service with more than 22,000 employees caring for a community of over 1.2 million Victorians. Subject to final approval on 1 January 2026, all employees from the five health services will transfer to Bayside Health.

About Our Team 

The Alfred Pathology Service (APS) is key to providing integrated and timely diagnostic capabilities as part of the largest public pathology laboratory network in Victoria. 

Alfred Health supports the local community while addressing complex state-wide needs, including trauma, organ transplantation and HIV/AIDS diagnostics. APS conducts all pathology testing for multiple hospitals, offering a comprehensive range of services through five specialized units: Anatomical Pathology, Clinical Biochemistry, Haematology, Microbiology, and Human Molecular Pathology. 

APS is committed to education and professional development, providing excellent learning opportunities for students and clinicians. Alfred Health and Monash Health have established a partnership and are delivering pathology services at Western Health (WH), which includes, collection centres, branch laboratories at New Footscray Hospital and Sunshine Hospital and point-of-care services.  We are working in partnership to ensure we meet future demands and continue to provide high quality pathology services for our patients and the community across both health services. 

Position Summary 

The Pathology Collector is responsible for the accurate, safe, and timely collection of pathology specimens with minimal supervision, while upholding the highest standards of patient care. The role requires proficiency in adult, paediatric, and neonatal blood collections as required, OGTT, blood gases, ECGs, and related procedures across inpatient, outpatient, and domiciliary settings. Responsibilities include precise specimen labelling, documentation, and packaging for analysis, along with accurate entry of pathology requests and patient information into laboratory systems. The position requires efficiency, professionalism, and adherence to Alfred/Monash Shared Pathology Service standards. Collections are performed in dedicated collection areas, hospital wards, and home visits across Western Health sites.

About You 

Qualifications Required: 

Essential:

  • Certificate III / IV in Pathology Specimen Collection
  • Valid Working with Children (Employer) card
  • Must have a current driver’s license.
  • Basic First Aid Skills

Desirable:

  • Certified CPR (desirable)
  • Previous experience with the iPM, Cerner PathNet Millennium system.

Experience and Skills Required: 

Grade 2 Phlebotomist (IN24): Perform all standard collection duties as outlined in the responsibilities section of the Position Description.

Grade 3 Phlebotomist (IN26): Demonstrate advanced venepuncture skills, with competence in at least two of the following advanced techniques:

  • Infant skin puncture
  • Venesections
  • Paediatric venepuncture (0–9 years)
  • Home visits
