The Alfred Pathology Service (APS) is key to providing integrated and timely diagnostic capabilities as part of the largest public pathology laboratory network in Victoria.
Alfred Health supports the local community while addressing complex state-wide needs, including trauma, organ transplantation and HIV/AIDS diagnostics. APS conducts all pathology testing for multiple hospitals, offering a comprehensive range of services through five specialized units: Anatomical Pathology, Clinical Biochemistry, Haematology, Microbiology, and Human Molecular Pathology.

Alfred Health and Monash Health have established a partnership to deliver a pathology services at Western Health (WH), which includes, collection centres, branch laboratories at New Footscray Hospital and Sunshine Hospital and point-of-care services. We are working in partnership to ensure we meet future demands and continue to provide high quality pathology services for our patients and the community across both health services.
Position Summary
The Scientist in this position is responsible for the day-to-day organisation of the Microbiology Unit at Western Health laboratory sites (New Footscray Hospital and Sunshine Hospital laboratories). This includes performance of all pathology tests provided by the Unit at those sites, staff training, evaluation and introduction of new tests, equipment maintenance, quality assurance, updating of laboratory manuals, and administrative duties. Following training, and under the supervision of the Principal Scientist in Microbiology at Prahran, the incumbent will oversee the Microbiology laboratory in both the Bacteriology and Serology/Molecular Microbiology areas.
About You
Qualifications Required:
- Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Applied Science (Medical Laboratory Science), with a major in Microbiology (or equivalent).
- Higher qualification such as M.Sc., or fellowship of any relevant professional body e.g. AIMS will be highly desirable
Experience and Skills Required:
- At least 8 years’ experience in working in Microbiology.
- Demonstrate in-depth expertise in Microbiology.
- Demonstrated organisational and leadership skills.
- Sound verbal and written communication skills.
- Computer proficiency and good working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.
- Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
- Previous leadership role in a Microbiology laboratory is highly desirable.
