Alfred Health hosts the Alfred Health / Monash Health Shared Pathology Service reform project.

  • HS7 (Circa $170,000 - $200,000 + super)

About the Department

As part of the Department of Health’s initiative to return public pathology to public hospitals and ensure consistent, assessable care for all Victorians, Alfred Health and Monash Health have established a partnership to deliver a Shared Pathology Service.

Pathology services are provided from two main laboratories (The Alfred in Prahran and Monash Medical Centre in Clayton), and six branch laboratories (Casey Hospital, Dandenong Hospital, Moorabbin Hospital, Sandringham Hospital, Wonthaggi Hospital and Victorian Heart Hospital).  In addition, there are 23 collection centres and rooms spread across South East Melbourne and South Gippsland, with the furthest one located in Yarram.  The Shared Pathology Service is currently planning to expand services to Western Health by early 2026.

About the Role
Alfred Health and Monash Health are seeking an experienced and strategic Project Director to lead the delivery of major reform initiatives across the Alfred/Monash Shared Pathology Service network.

This pivotal role, working closely with the CEO and Pathology Executive Teams, will oversee the development and implementation of a Shared Pathology Strategy. The Project Director will operate across both Alfred Health and Monash Health, fostering collaboration and alignment. A regular on-site presence at both Alfred Health Pathology, Monash Health Pathology, and other health service locations within the pathology network will be essential to support effective engagement and successful delivery.

Reporting to the CEO, Shared Pathology Service, the Project Director will be responsible for delivering the reform objectives within agreed timelines and budgets.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the establishment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of the Alfred/Monash Shared Pathology Reform Project.
  • Renew governance structures, stakeholder engagement plans, budgets, risk registers, and strategic project documentation.
  • Led and implement the agreed reform activities
  • Support service expansion, including Western Health.
  • Represent the Shared Pathology Service in external forums and liaise with government agencies and contractors.
  • Ensure compliance with safety, quality, risk, and financial management standards.
  • Budget management of reform budget and other major capital investment.  Develop business cases and report on financial performance.
  • Promote a culture of continuous improvement, inclusivity, and patient-centred care.

  • Directors and Executive teams across Alfred, Monash, and Western Health
  • Internal departments: Finance, Procurement, IT, HR, Legal, Public Affairs
  • External stakeholders: Government agencies, suppliers, and contractors

About You 

You are a seasoned leader with a strong background in health service delivery and project management. You bring:

  • Tertiary qualifications in a relevant business or health discipline.
  • Proven experience in leading complex reform projects within healthcare.
  • Strong strategic thinking, stakeholder engagement, and communication skills.
  • A deep understanding of contemporary health systems and policy directions.
  • High-level organisational, analytical, financial and performance management capabilities.
