The Department

Alfred Health’s Legal Office comprises six staff – General Counsel, Deputy General Counsel, two Senior Legal Counsel, a Legal Counsel, and an Executive Assistant. The Legal Office provides advice and assistance to the organisation and its staff on a range of corporate, commercial and medico-legal issues.

Position Summary

Alfred Health, Bass Coast Health, Gippsland Southern Health Service, Kooweerup Regional Health Services and Peninsula Health are preparing to merge into a single health service. Reporting to the General Counsel, the position will assist in the delivery of sophisticated and pragmatic legal services to all five health services to progress the merger, primarily involving:

  • contract analysis and negotiation
  • investigations into matters affecting regulatory compliance, as part of an overall ‘due diligence’ enquiry for the new entity’s Board
  • engagement with courts to transfer existing litigation to the new entity 
  • reviewing and, where necessary, updating corporate governance documentation to reflect the new entity and 
  • policy work and alignment of contracts in preparation for the amalgamation

Qualifications and Experience required

Essential

  • Degree in Law 
  • Currently admitted as an Australian Legal Practitioner 
  • Demonstrated experience in delivery of pragmatic legal advice 

Desirable 

  • Knowledge of the health sector and its legal challenges would be considered favourably. 
  • Experience in project management and organisational change.
