The Department – Alfred Cancer – Integrative Oncology and Wellness Centre

The Integrative Oncology and Wellness Centre at Alfred Cancer provides whole-person, supportive cancer care. Working alongside conventional cancer treatment, the service provides evidence-based supportive therapies, practical guidance, education and psychosocial support to help patients and their families live as well as possible throughout their cancer experience.

Our multidisciplinary approach brings together a range of health professionals to address the emotional, social, physical and practical needs of people affected by cancer, with a strong focus on wellbeing, quality of life and survivorship

The Role

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced Social Worker seeking a stimulating part-time role in supportive cancer care, with the opportunity to work closely with a multidisciplinary team in an outpatient setting. 

The Social Worker is responsible for the provision of social work services to patients and their families/significant others including assessing the psycho-social functioning of patients, counselling, providing information on resources and services and facilitating effective patient discharge and community care.

The Social Worker in the Integrative Oncology Unit  provides comprehensive psychosocial support and intervention for patients diagnosed with cancer, as well as their families. This role is integral to the development and delivery of evidence-based holistic programs, including group programs, and other supportive therapies, aimed at enhancing patient well-being and quality of life. The Social Worker will be committed to patient-centred care and work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team to address the emotional, social, and practical needs of our patients.

We are looking for someone who is empathetic, adaptable and strongly person-centred, with excellent communication skills and confidence working both independently and collaboratively. You will bring clinical curiosity, sound judgement and enthusiasm for multidisciplinary care, and enjoy contributing to an innovative service focused on continually improving the experience and wellbeing of people living with and beyond cancer.

Experience and Qualifications Required

  • Bachelor of Social Work or approved/recognised equivalent, with eligibility for membership of the Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW)
  • Minimum 3 years' post-qualifying social work experience, with demonstrated commitment to ongoing professional development
  • Hospital experience, together with demonstrated experience and understanding of the diverse needs of people affected by cancer
  • Advanced psychosocial assessment and intervention skills, including an understanding of trauma responses, adjustment and coping
  • Experience developing, delivering and evaluating evidence-based individual and group interventions
  • Strong communication and multidisciplinary collaboration skills, with the ability to build effective relationships with patients, families, colleagues and key stakeholders
  • Understanding of research, quality improvement and evaluation principles
  • Current Working with Children Check
