The Department

The Access Unit holds key responsibility for the strategic planning, day-to-day operations, patient flow, demand management, and bed modelling that supports Caulfield Hospital 24/7. Reporting through the Home, Acute, and Community program, the unit serves as a vital operational hub ensuring optimal resource management and patient throughput.

The Role

As a Clinical Operations Manager (COM), you will be a key member of the nursing management team, providing critical operational leadership, supervision, and clinical governance after hours. Actively bridging the gap between "in hours" and "after hours" services, this position assumes responsibility for the Access Unit, Allocations Department, and broader hospital operations outside of standard business hours.

Key responsibilities

  • Managing hospital operations, business continuity, and emergency situations, escalating to the Director on Call when appropriate
  • Coordinating out-of-hours bed management, admissions, transfers, and discharges in conjunction with treating medical teams
  • Conducting the Allocations Office function after hours to oversee supplemental staffing and manage unplanned leave
  • Acting as a clinical role model, managing after-hours patient/staff incidents, facilitating debriefings, and addressing initial complaints.

About You

We are seeking a decisive, highly organized Registered Nurse who brings:

  • Current registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia via APHRA
  • A strong clinical background in the acute health sector with a robust professional identity
  • Proven leadership capabilities, including the ability to make accurate, informed decisions under pressure and effectively manage complex situations
  • Exceptional communication and negotiation skills to build relationships across multidisciplinary and non-clinical support teams
  • Competence in Advanced Life Support (ALS) and a willingness to maintain or develop relevant advanced clinical skills
  • A Master’s level qualification (or evidence of working towards a Graduate Certificate/Master's) is highly desirable
