The Department

The MS and Neuroimmunology (MSNI) Unit The Alfred was established in late 2017 and has dramatically expanded with a large academic and clinical program at all Alfred campuses.  Led by A/Prof. Anneke van der Walt, the service includes 8 additional consultants, four senior fellows, and a Basic sciences team. The Neuro-ophthalmology Unit (NOPH) provides care to people with visual disorders related to dysfunction of the nervous system.  It is supported by four consultant neuro-ophthalmologists, two fellows, an endocrinologist, a clinical and research nurse, a dietician, orthoptists and an admin officer.  The NOPH unit provides clinical care on Tuesday mornings and Thursday afternoons.  Care is coordinated closely with the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital and other collaborators.  
The MSNI Ethics officer will be integrated into the MSNI and Neuro-ophthalmology teams that include nurses, admin managers, additional research and clinical nurses. The MSNI and Neuro-ophthalmology teams are actively involved in translational research, clinical trial research (phase 2-4) and observational and quality registries.  All research activities are closely integrated with the clinical services of the unit. 

The Role
We are looking for a highly organised, energetic person with experience in clinical research to join our collaborative team. The primary responsibility of the MSNI Ethics and Research Admin Officer is to prepare and submit Human Research Ethics Committee Ethics (HREC) and Governance applications, budgets, amendments and progress reports for the various clinical and investigator-initiated trials being conducted by the Alfred MSNI and NOPH unit. The appointee will be required to liaise with the relevant investigators and the responsible research nurse for a variety of research projects.   The appointee will also communicate and work with the CRO Monitors and other relevant staff as required to support various studies.   
The appointee will be required to provide clerical assistance to the Director, MSNI as well as other clerical and admin duties as directed by the MSNI nurse consultant and Clinical Research Coordinator, the NOPH Practice and Research Nurse and relevant administrators. . 
The role will be varied with wide exposure to different trial methods.  The appointee will be able to continue building their skill set in a supportive environment. 

Skills  

  • Relevant qualifications in administrative and/or research governance work 
  • Experience in Clinical Research especially Human ethics and Governance processes.
  • Experience and working knowledge of ethics databases such as ERM
  • Experience in financial management of research trials 
  • Strong communication, interpersonal and organisational skills 
  • Strong and proven time management skills 
  • Have good working knowledge of MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Microsoft Outlook 
  • Ability to work independently  as well as within a diverse team environment.
