Alfred Health is a leader in health care delivery, improvement, research and education. We are the main provider of health services to people living in the inner southeast suburbs of Melbourne, from ambulatory to inpatient and home and community-based services. On 1 January 2026, Alfred Health will come together with Kooweerup Regional Health Service, Peninsula Health, Bass Coast Health and Gippsland Southern Health Service to create Bayside Health, a newly merged health service with more than 22,000 employees caring for a community of over 1.2 million Victorians. The new health service will provide people with the best possible care with services that support them throughout their lives. The merger will also strengthen our workforce, providing new training, education and career opportunities. Subject to final approval on 1 January 2026, all employees from the five health services will transfer to Bayside Health.

The Department
Alfred Psychiatry sits within the Division of Ambulatory Services & Mental Health at The Alfred. It comprises both adult and child & adolescent services and a research unit. There is an important relationship also with the aged mental health service at Caulfield General Medical Centre (CGMC).
The Adult Mental Health Service (AMHS) includes both hospital and community services. The inpatient unit is made up of 58 beds distributed across two wards and includes a state-wide psychiatric intensive care unit (PICU). Each ward has a full range of nursing, allied health and medical staff. The general hospital and ED are serviced by a comprehensive Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry Service and a CATT/Triage team. The community service comprises two community mental health clinics that incorporate Continuing Care Teams (CCTs) and a Homeless Team (HOPS). A Psychiatric Rehabilitation Service includes the Mobile Support & Treatment Team (MSTS), the Continuing Care Unit (CCU), Opening Doors Program and the Complex Care Program (services established between the PDRSS and Clinical Program of Alfred Psychiatry). A Prevention & Recovery Care (PARC) Unit provides 10 step up /step down beds and care is provided in partnership with the Mental Illness Fellowship of Victoria (MIFV) and Alfred Psychiatry. The Primary Mental Health Team (PMHT) supports primary health services within this sector.
The Role
The Associate Nurse Manager is a member of the nursing leadership team within Acute Adult Inpatient Mental Health Ward who assists the Nurse Manager to operationalise the core values of the organisation, and plays a pivotal role in meeting broader organisational imperatives. Inherent within the requirement of this role is a capacity of the Associate Nurse Manager to work rotating shifts and undertake leadership of the night duty period for at least 3 months annually. She/He supports excellence in clinical practice and promotes the development of nurses, ensuring the philosophy of nursing and standards of practice are consistently reflected in professional practice and patient care. Together with the Nurse Manager, the Associate Nurse Manager is responsible for managing clinical risk and implementing systems and processes to improve patient outcomes. The Associate Nurse Manager facilitates timely patient access and flow across the continuum of care.
Skills
- Currently Registered Nurse Division 1 or 3, registration with AHPRA
- Relevant post-graduate diploma or working toward same
- Recent acute clinical mental health nursing background in a relevant health service
