We are the main provider of health services to people living in the inner southeast suburbs of Melbourne, from ambulatory to inpatient and home and community-based services. On 1 January 2026, Alfred Health will come together with Kooweerup Regional Health Service, Peninsula Health, Bass Coast Health and Gippsland Southern Health Service to create Bayside Health, a newly merged health service with more than 22,000 employees caring for a community of over 1.2 million Victorians. The new health service will provide people with the best possible care with services that support them throughout their lives. The merger will also strengthen our workforce, providing new training, education and career opportunities. Subject to final approval on 1 January 2026, all employees from the five health services will transfer to Bayside Health.

The Department

The Alfred Health Emergency, Virtual care and Outpatients (EVO) Program is responsible for the delivery of emergency and paediatric clinical services across Alfred Health, as well as several other clinical support services. This program also plays an integral role in the access and flow demand as well as capacity management across both Alfred & Sandringham.
Alfred Health Emergency sees approximately 120,000 patients per annum across two Departments; the Alfred Emergency & Trauma Centre (E&TC) manages approximately 75,000 patients, and the Sandringham Emergency Department manages approximately 45,000 patients each year.

Sandringham Emergency Department is community focused and has an integrated Urgent Care Centre in addition to the emergency services through the main Emergency Department. The Alfred E&TC is one of the state’s busiest emergency departments, providing timely quality care to acutely unwell and injured Victorians as well as a variety of state-wide services for critically unwell Victorians.

The EVO Program is responsible for several additional services that support the delivery of clinical care. These include GP Liaison Service, Health Information Service, Virtual Services (such as Telehealth support team and the Timely Management of Chest Pain Pilot), Specialist Clinics Support Unit and the Operations Support Unit.

The Role

This position plays a critical leadership role in managing and optimising patient transport services across Alfred Health. This position is responsible for strategic oversight of transport operations, ensuring compliance with health service guidelines, and driving continuous improvement initiatives. The role requires advanced decision-making, stakeholder engagement, and the ability to lead and mentor junior staff.

The Transport Coordinator will require an understanding of, and ability to apply the Department of Health Ambulance services payment guidelines, the Alfred Health Patient Transport Guideline, as well as knowledge and understanding of different transport categories and associated costs. Responsibilities may include NEPT (Non-Emergency Patient Transport) invoice auditing, reconciliation, approval/rejection of transport bookings, responding to internal enquiries, supporting transport decision-making, reporting transport activity and spend to internal stakeholders, and liaising with transport providers.

The Transport Coordinator will have oversight of all internal patient logistics including ancillary support transfers within the organization and assisting with prioritising demand, escalating delays and working closely with the Clinical Operations Manager and Patient Flow Coordinator to ensure timely progression of care.

Skills and Experience required

Essential

  • Demonstrated experience in a senior administrative or coordination role within a healthcare setting
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Strong understanding of patient transport systems and healthcare logistics

Highly Desirable

  • Experience with non-emergency patient transport providers
  • Familiarity with Cerner and other hospital information systems
  • Knowledge of relevant health sector legislation and guidelines
