About Us
Ngamai Wilam is a 12-bed residential eating disorder treatment facility in Armadale. Jointly funded by the Australian Federal Government and the Victorian Government, this specialist service is managed by Alfred Health.
Ngamai Wilam provides 24/7 trauma-informed, recovery-focused care in a gender-inclusive, home-like therapeutic environment. With a strong emphasis on family and chosen supports, the service is dedicated to long-term recovery and person-centred care.
As part of AMAH Statewide Services, alongside WREN (Women’s Recovery Network), Ngamai Wilam is at the forefront of innovative mental health care, integrating Open Dialogue principles to promote collaborative and holistic recovery.
About the Role
As a Senior Carer Peer Specialist Eating Disorders, you will play a pivotal role in supporting families and carers as they navigate their loved one’s recovery journey from an eating disorder. Drawing from your own lived experience in a caring role, you will provide peer support, coaching, and guidance, with particular attention to the unique challenges faced by families and supporters. This role involves working alongside the multidisciplinary team to provide individual and group-based support, empowering carers to feel confident, informed, and connected in their role.
You will contribute to the recovery process by sharing your personal experience, offering hope, and fostering a sense of understanding and partnership. You will support carers in navigating the complexities of caring for someone experiencing an eating disorder, ensuring that the carer perspective is embedded in service delivery and team practices.
In this role you will:
- Provide one-on-one peer support to carers of individuals in the Ngamai Wilam Residential Program offering guidance and emotional support using your lived experience as a carer of someone with an eating disorder.
- Co-facilitate group sessions focused on educating carers about eating disorders and how to support their loved ones through recovery building coping skills, resilience, and promoting self-care for carers.
- Facilitate family meetings and support carers in understanding the challenges their loved one’s face during the recovery process, promoting a collaborative, recovery-focused environment.
- In collaboration with the therapeutic team, provide meal support coaching to carers, helping them understand how to support their loved ones in overcoming meal-related challenges.
- Assist carers in developing self-care strategies and maintaining a healthy balance between supporting their loved ones and looking after their own mental and emotional well-being.
- Offer consultation to the multidisciplinary team, providing insights into the carer experience and how best to support them in their role.
- Advocate for the inclusion of the carer’s perspective within the team, ensuring that the service delivery model remains responsive to the needs of families and carers.
- Document case notes in clear, non-clinical language, focusing on the strengths and progress of carers in supporting their loved ones’ recovery.
- Contribute to staff training, providing valuable insights into the challenges carers face and the importance of integrating the carer perspective into treatment plans.
- Engage in regular discipline supervision and professional development opportunities to ensure personal selfcare and to stay informed about best practices in supporting carers of individuals with eating disorders.
- Participate actively in team meetings, case discussions, and care planning, providing feedback from the carer’s perspective.
- Provide feedback regularly on family / carer issues to the service and contribute to the development and review of mechanisms shape service delivery and promote family inclusiveness within the service.
Qualifications & Eligibility
Essential
- Lived experience as a carer of an individual with an eating disorder, with a thorough understanding of the unique challenges carers face.
- At least 2 years of direct work experience providing carer peer support in a professional capacity, particularly in the context of eating disorders.
- Ability to offer guidance and emotional support to carers, with a focus on helping them navigate the complexities of eating disorder recovery.
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively with carers, participants, and the multidisciplinary team.
- A commitment to the principles of carer peer support in the context of eating disorder treatment.
- Current Victorian Driver Licence
Desirable
- Experience working collaboratively with individuals and groups to build and maintain effective relationships within multidisciplinary teams.
- Experience facilitating groups or support sessions focused on the carer experience and family support.
- Formal qualifications, such as Certificate IV in Mental Health Peer Work or Intentional Peer Support Core Training, are desirable but not mandatory
