The Department

Alfred Health’s Physiotherapy Department provides acute physiotherapy services to the patients of The Alfred and Sandringham Hospital and subacute physiotherapy services to Caulfield Hospital.  

The acute physiotherapy service is organised into five functional streams, namely: Intensive Care, Musculoskeletal, Respiratory, PAN (Progressive Illness, Aged Care and Neurosciences), and Sandringham.  The first four streams are located at The Alfred site, with the fifth and latter stream based at the Sandringham site. The physiotherapy service provides acute clinical services and expertise in the following areas: intensive care, cardiothoracic surgery, general surgery, orthopaedics, trauma, burns, lung transplantation, cystic fibrosis, pulmonary rehabilitation, neurology and neurosurgery, infectious diseases, haematology / oncology, general medicine, haemophilia and emergency.  

Caulfield Hospital Physiotherapy Department provides an extensive range of inpatient and ambulatory services in the areas of rehabilitation, aged care and residential care services. The physiotherapy department has more than 50 staff with another 15 physiotherapists working in other ambulatory and community services on site.  

The department provides subacute clinical services and expertise in the following areas: ABI, neurology, non-traumatic spinal cord injury, orthopaedics, amputees, burns, pain, aged care, transitional care and aged psychiatry.   

The Alfred Health Physiotherapy Department has more than 100 EFT and employs over 170 staff. The physiotherapy service has a proud history of clinical and academic excellence.  It remains strongly committed to further pursuing excellence in physiotherapy, through clinical research. 

The Alfred Health Physiotherapy Department is a major partner in the Alfred Health Physiotherapy Clinical Schools for both La Trobe and Monash Universities and in this role provides core and elective clinical placements for more than 50 undergraduate physiotherapy students. 

There is a strong commitment to professional development and research with staff able to access an extensive continuing education program on site and the support of Associate Prof of Physiotherapy for research activities. 

The Role

The Grade 2 Senior Physiotherapist (Trauma) is responsible for the provision and development of physiotherapy services to trauma and acute orthopaedic patients at The Alfred, as an integral component of the innovative model of care that provides an increased intensity of therapy to these patient groups. This model focuses on providing targeted cohorts of patients with more intense physiotherapy to enhance patient outcomes, facilitate discharge from the acute setting and expand therapy provided by the weekend service. The position may involve work at any of the three sites across Alfred Health including The Alfred, Caulfield and Sandringham hospitals, and may evolve to include rotations across different clinical areas. This position requires regular weekend work as a standard roster. 

The Grade 2 Senior Physiotherapist (Trauma) will contribute to the supervision and professional development of Grade 1 staff working in this team, and the education of undergraduate physiotherapy students undertaking clinical placements. 

The Grade 2 Senior Physiotherapist (Trauma) will promote the development of individuals, the clinical team and the physiotherapy service through demonstration of their initiative and application of their high-level leadership, teamwork and communication skills. 

Skills/Qualifications Required

  • Registered to practice in the state of Victoria (AHPRA) 
  • Demonstrated advanced knowledge and skills in the provision of physiotherapy services in the management of acute trauma patients across the continuum of care
  • Demonstrated advanced knowledge of the provision of physiotherapy practice to patients in the trauma setting
  • Demonstrated ability to plan and manage a caseload, including the co-ordination of other staff 
  • Demonstrated ability to undertake quality initiatives 
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise students and Grade 1 Staff 
  • Demonstrated communication skills 
  • Demonstrated time management skills
