On 1 January 2026, Alfred Health will come together with Kooweerup Regional Health Service, Peninsula Health, Bass Coast Health and Gippsland Southern Health Service to create Bayside Health, a newly merged health service with more than 22,000 employees caring for a community of over 1.2 million Victorians. The merger will also strengthen our workforce, providing new training, education and career opportunities. Subject to final approval on 1 January 2026, all employees from the five health services will transfer to Bayside Health.

About Our Team
The Alfred Pathology Service (APS) is key to providing integrated and timely diagnostic capabilities as part of the largest public pathology laboratory network in Victoria.
Alfred Health supports the local community while addressing complex state-wide needs, including trauma, organ transplantation and HIV/AIDS diagnostics. APS conducts all pathology testing for multiple hospitals, offering a comprehensive range of services through five specialized units: Anatomical Pathology, Clinical Biochemistry, Haematology, Microbiology, and Human Molecular Pathology.

Alfred Health and Monash Health have established a partnership and are delivering pathology services at Western Health (WH), which includes, collection centres, branch laboratories at New Footscray Hospital and Sunshine Hospital and point-of-care services. We are working in partnership to ensure we meet future demands and continue to provide high quality pathology services for our patients and the community across both health services.
Position Summary
The Director of Laboratory Operations (WH) plays a key leadership role in overseeing the delivery and performance of laboratory services across our Western locations including Sunshine and Footscray. This position is responsible for driving operational excellence, building and maintaining strong relationships with key stakeholders and contributing to strategic and operational planning across the pathology network. The role leads organisational activities to ensure effective service delivery, financial sustainability and alignment with the Shared Pathology strategic plan. In addition, the Director supports project development, change management initiatives and continuous improvement of work practices and operational structures to enhance efficiency and outcomes.
The Director is also accountable for ensuring the operation of pathology services are within budget, compliance with employee enterprise agreements and adherence to all regulatory requirements including ISO15189 and NPAAC. This includes managing equipment and assets to support sustainable service delivery, while fostering and maintaining strong relationships essential to the effective operation and advancement of the Shared Pathology Service.
About You
Qualifications Required:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Science, Applied Science (Medical Laboratory Scientist) or recognised equivalent.
- Post Graduate qualifications in Pathology Management would be highly desirable.
Experience and Skills Required:
- A pathology scientific background of at least 10 years, being an expert with particular knowledge in one or more scientific disciplines.
- A track record of successful leadership within a complex professional and multidisciplinary services environment.
- Proven management abilities in developing and implementing strategies, business and operational plans and financial objectives, preferably within a pathology setting or similar complex health related environment.
- Proven ability to interpret and co-ordinate the Human Resource, Industrial Relations and Financial responsibilities of a complex business unit.
- Experience in organisational change and project management.
