  • Fixed term to 30 June 2027, Part-time (45.6 hrs/fn / 3 days/week)
  • Based in Moorabbin with some travel required between locations
  • Lived experience as a carer of a young person with an eating disorder is essential
  • Frequent professional development opportunities and regular professional supervision

The Department

Alfred Infant Child and Youth Area Mental Health and Wellbeing Service (ICYAMHWS) is welcoming to infants, children, young people and their families/carers.  

We provide accessible mental health services inclusive of family, friends and support networks.  

We are a specialist, multi-disciplinary and intensive care mental health service incorporating the lived and living experience of family peer specialists and youth peer workers.  

Our service is divided into two streams 0-11 and 12-26 years and includes specialist services in the areas of perinatal care, neurodevelopmental presentations, eating disorders and outreach support.

Family Lived Experience 

The Family / Carer Peer Specialist program works in conjunction with our clinical teams to journey alongside family members or other carers in the network of the young person. Family members and friends often provide the main safety net and support system for a young person. Evidence shows that when family and friends are involved with services, outcomes for young people improve.

The aim of Family Peer Lived Experience is to:

  • promote hope and through shared experience of supporting a young person, encourage a positive and recovery outlook;
  • minimise the impact of complex mental health issues on family and significant others of young people within the service; and
  • support the engagement of families and significant others with the service in order to enhance the process of recovery for young people experiencing complex mental health issues.

ABOUT THE ROLE

As one of our Family Peer Specialists, you will draw from your own lived experience to offer support, either face to face or over the telephone, to families of young people up to 26 years of age attending Alfred ICYAMHWS.

ABOUT YOU

  • Lived experience as a carer of a young person with an eating disorder (essential)
  • Desire and commitment to the provision of emotional support to family members/significant others of young people experiencing an eating disorder
  • Australian working rights and current influenza vaccination
  • Current Victorian Driver's License
  • Current Working with Children Check or willing to obtain one, and be willing to undergo a Police Check (International Police check also if lived overseas within the past 10 years)
