About the Organisation

Alfred Health and Monash Health have established a partnership to deliver a Shared Pathology Service (SPS).  This partnership is aligned with the Victorian Government’s wider Pathology system reform to create new public pathology networks.  The Shared Pathology Service was successful in tendering for the provision of Pathology Services at Western Health including the laboratories at New Footscray Hospital and Sunshine.  We are working in partnership to ensure we meet future demands and continue to provide high quality pathology services for our patients and the community across both health service.

The Role

This is a full-time role, requiring the incumbent to work primarily in the Histopathology and Cytology section applying a broad range of histological and Cytological techniques across the Shared Pathology Service, including but not limited to the Prahan Laboratory, New Footscray Hospital Laboratory’s and frozen sections at the Sunshine Laboratory.  The role will require participation in a rotating roster, Monday to Sunday between the hours of 06:30 to 21:00.

The Scientist in this position will be responsible for supporting the Grade 3 Supervising Scientist with the validation or verification of instruments across the Western Health Laboratories (WH) at the New Footscray Hospital and Sunshine Hospital. Under the supervision of the Supervising Scientist, the incumbent will perform validation/ verification studies on the new instruments installed at the Western Health sites, carry-out day-to-day equipment maintenance, and perform quality control and quality assurance programs, as required. 

The position will require the incumbent to work on premises under construction and will need to wear appropriate personal protective equipment whilst on these premises. These include but are not limited to, Safety Helmet, steel-toe covered footwear, safety glasses and high-visibility vests. As such, the position will require a White Card qualification, the cost of which will be covered by the SPS.

Key Skills and Qualification(s)

  • Bachelor’s degree in science, Applied Science (Medical Laboratory Scientist) or equivalent.
  • At least 5 years’ experience working in Anatomical Pathology and Cytology.
  • Demonstrate in-depth expertise working in an Anatomical Pathology laboratory.
  • Demonstrated organisational and leadership skills.
  • Sound verbal and written communication skills.
  • Computer proficiency and good working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
  • Class C driver’s license and willingness to travel to the various WH and Prahran sites as needed.

Desirable Requirement:

  • Experience in performing validation studies in an Anatomical Pathology or related department.
