About us

Alfred Mental & Addiction Health (AMAH) is responsible for the operation of services, which focus on people with a severe mental illness residing in the Inner South Eastern area of Melbourne.

The single most important goal of AMAH is to create an environment that facilitates clinical recovery, supports individual recovery efforts and strives to minimise service system barriers to the recovery process.

The newly developed Hospital and Emergency Services Department provides a range of clinical services delivered by two streams of care including Inpatient Services and Consultation Liaison and Emergency Psychiatry Services.

These combined streams aim to embed a trauma informed approach throughout the continuum of care which includes at each consumer’s entry to our services, at assessment, treatment and during hospital stays. This is line with the recommendations from the Royal Commission into Victoria’s Mental Health and part of our implementation of the requirements presented in the Victorian Mental Health and Wellbeing Act, 2022.

About the role

Restrictive interventions are distressing, traumatising and non-therapeutic, leaving people who experience them with long-term impacts. For this reason, Victoria has a legislative framework and oversight regime to regulate restrictive interventions and to ensure they are prevented or only ever used as a last resort after other options were tried or considered to be unsuitable.

In this role, you will be responsible for monitoring the use of restrictive interventions across Alfred Health and ensuring all staff both understand and are working towards the goal of reducing this practice. You will ensure staff adhere to the legislative requirements of the Mental Health and Well Being Act 2022 and provide education regarding effective strategies for managing complex behaviours.

You will work across all campus’ and but not limited to, with education & workforce, Quality and Safety, OVA, CL Psychiatry, ABI Unit, E&TC and ICU. A key part of this role is building capacity and capability to provide individualised care that meets patients needs and ensures the safety of staff by promoting alternative strategies to restrictive interventions. The ability to analyse data and prepare reports to peak committees is essential.
