Alfred Health

Alfred Health is a leader in health care delivery, improvement, research and education. We are the main provider of health services to people living in the inner southeast suburbs of Melbourne, from ambulatory, to inpatient and home and community-based services.

The Alfred Department of Intensive Care is a state of the art 65 bedded unit that treats over 3000 patients per year. The Alfred ICU provides Victorian state services for heart and lung transplantation (including paediatric lung transplantation), short- and long-term mechanical cardiac device, extra-corporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), burns and hyperbaric medicine. The Alfred is one of two centres providing state services for adult trauma, HIV and bone marrow transplantation (autologous and allogeneic). In addition, most other surgical and medical subspecialties are represented in the case-mix in keeping with the quaternary referral centre status of The Alfred Hospital.

This role of ECMO Fellow will enable the fellow to develop skills in the provision of ECMO for critically ill patients. After appropriate training this will include involvement in selection of patients for ECMO, ECMO cannulation and management of patients on ECMO. A significant proportion of the role will include involvement in ECMO quality improvement and research. In addition, a major focus of the role will be leading ECMO simulation and training under the supervision of the Alfred ECMO team.

The Alfred Department of Intensive Care is accredited for 2 core years of training as stipulated by the College of Intensive Care Medicine. There is an extensive consultant led education program including dedicated protected weekly teaching sessions for junior and senior registrars aimed at developing both technical and non-technical skills. This program includes weekly journal club sessions, in-situ simulation training and bronchoscopy training.

We provide an ECMO and artificial heart training program to enable trainees to gain formal certification in this area. In addition, we also provide, for senior registrars, specific training in leadership and mentoring, again with certification available on completion. For advanced trainees preparing for the CICM examination there is additional consultant led training provided.

The Alfred education website is available at http://intensiveblog.com

The position is for 12 month duration and commences in August 2025.

Shortlisted applicants will be asked to prepare a 5 minute presentation as part of their interview.
