Research Nurse or Clinical Trial Coordinator

MS, Neuroimmunology and Neuro-ophthalmology (MSNI) Unit, Alfred Brain

Location: The Alfred, Melbourne (with clinics at Alfred, Caulfield and Sandringham Hospitals) 

Employment: 0.6-0.8 FTE | [12 months/ fixed term] 

Classification: Research Nurse, YU13 Level 2 (Nurses and Midwives EA 2024-2028) or 

Study Coordinator, HS5 (HS33) (Administrative, Clerical and Managers), depending on your background

Reports to: Director, MS and Neuroimmunology 

We're recruiting one person to coordinate clinical trials across our MS, neuroimmunology and neuro-ophthalmology programs. We'll appoint either a registered nurse or an experienced trial coordinator from a non-nursing background. Tell us which you are and we'll classify the role accordingly.

About the unit

The MSNI Unit at The Alfred is an academic clinical service caring for people with multiple sclerosis and other neuroimmunological conditions. It incorporates the neuro-ophthalmology service and the CAR-T cell neuroimmunology program. Our research portfolio runs from phase 2-4 industry-sponsored trials to investigator-initiated studies and translational work. Current themes include patient self-monitoring, brain health, women's health in MS, progressive MS, genomics, CAR-T cell neuroimmunology, idiopathic intracranial hypertension and myasthenia gravis. We're the lead site for the MSBase and MGBase international registries. The Alfred is Australia's largest clinical trials site.

You will join a team that includes the another senior Study Coordinator, an MS nurse consultant, the Neuro-ophthalmology Nurse Manager and other research staff.

What you'll do

• Prepare and Coordinate the full trial cycle for industry and investigator-initiated studies: start-up, recruitment, participant follow-up, amendments and progress reporting
• Prepare and submit ethics and governance documentation
• Take informed consent and make sure participants understand what they've agreed to
• Enter and maintain data in MSBase, REDCap, iMedidata and other study databases
• Collect blood samples, record physiological data including blood pressure and ECGs, and carry out trial procedures within your credentialed scope
• Support participants by phone and email between visits
• Work with teams across Bayside Health to schedule research visits around clinical care
• Contribute to audits and quality activities, and back up colleagues on their trials

What we're looking for

Whichever path you come from:

• Experience coordinating investigator initiated and/or pharma-sponsored clinical trials
• Sound working knowledge of ICH-GCP and the Australian regulatory environment
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills, and the confidence to negotiate with sponsors, monitors and clinicians
• The judgement to work independently and prioritise across several concurrent studies
• Venipuncture and ECG skills, or willingness to be trained
• Current Basic Life Support accreditation, or willingness to obtain and maintain it

If you're a nurse, you'll also need registration as a Registered Nurse (Division 1) with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia, plus intravenous cannulation skills and a CASA course every two years.

If you're not a nurse, we'd expect a degree in a health or science discipline and substantial hands-on coordination experience. Cannulation and other procedures outside your scope are covered by nursing colleagues in the unit.

Hospital neuroscience experience is a plus, not a requirement.

You'll see studies through from protocol to publication in a unit where research and clinical care sit in the same corridor. There's scope to build specialist skills in neuroimmunology and neuro-ophthalmology, to contribute to nurse-led and investigator-initiated projects, and to work with an international registry collaboration.
