About Our Team 

The Alfred Pathology Service (APS) is key to providing integrated and timely diagnostic capabilities as part of the largest public pathology laboratory network in Victoria. 

Alfred Health supports the local community while addressing complex state-wide needs, including trauma, organ transplantation and HIV/AIDS diagnostics. APS conducts all pathology testing for multiple hospitals, offering a comprehensive range of services through five specialized units: Anatomical Pathology, Clinical Biochemistry, Haematology, Microbiology, and Human Molecular Pathology.

Alfred Health and Monash Health have established a partnership and are delivering pathology services at Western Health (WH), which includes, collection centres, branch laboratories at New Footscray Hospital and Sunshine Hospital and point-of-care services.  We are working in partnership to ensure we meet future demands and continue to provide high quality pathology services for our patients and the community across both health services. 

Position Summary 

This is a full-time position as Supervisor of the Central Specimen Processing (CSP) section of Alfred Pathology Service responsible for the day-to-day organisation of this area.  This includes performance of all duties provided by the section, staff management including recruitment, training and competency assessments, review and modification of work roles and investigation and corrective actions of errors and complaints.

About You 

Qualifications Required: 

Essential

- Successful completion of Year 12 schooling or equivalent.

- At least 7 years’ experience in a pathology laboratory.

- Proven experience supervising a workgroup or team.

- Experience with ‘Microsoft Office’ applications.

 Desirable

- Tertiary Qualifications in laboratory procedures or biological sciences.

- Experience with the ‘Cerner’ PathNet Millennium system.

- Experience with a quality management system such as FastTrack, IQM, Q-Pulse, RiskMan.

 

Experience and Skills Required: 

  • Proficiency in written and spoken English, with the ability to follow verbal and written instructions. 
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy in specimen handling, data entry, and laboratory procedures.
  • Organisation and day-to-day management of the Specimen Processing team and rotation of CSP staff to the Sandringham hospital laboratory. This includes office/ reception staff and the external Pathology courier.
  • Take responsibility for the quality of data entry, including billing information.
  • Maintain a 24-hour, 7-day roster, including allocation of all leave entitlements.
  • Recruit and train staff, maintain training and competency records and perform regular Performance Management.
  • Liaise with senior scientists in all units to resolve specimen/ test issues, as necessary.
  • Take responsibility for the operation of the pre-analytic track, including training of CSP staff and routine maintenance.
  • Follow-up and document all complaints and incidents relating to the Specimen Processing Unit.
  • Maintain a safe work environment and safe work practices in Specimen Processing.
  • Maintain all standard operating procedures ensuring they are up-to-date and in the laboratory Document Control system.
  • Ability to organise, prioritise, and manage daily tasks efficiently, both independently and under supervision.
