About Our Team  

The Alfred Pathology Service (APS) is key to providing integrated and timely diagnostic capabilities as part of the largest public pathology laboratory network in Victoria.  

Alfred Health supports the local community while addressing complex state-wide needs, including trauma, organ transplantation and HIV/AIDS diagnostics. APS conducts all pathology testing for multiple hospitals, offering a comprehensive range of services through five specialized units: Anatomical Pathology, Clinical Biochemistry, Haematology, Microbiology, and Human Molecular Pathology.

Alfred Health and Monash Health have established a partnership to deliver a pathology services at Western Health (WH), which includes, collection centres, branch laboratories at New Footscray Hospital and Sunshine Hospital and point-of-care services.  We are working in partnership to ensure we meet future demands and continue to provide high quality pathology services for our patients and the community across both health services.  

Position Summary  

The Laboratory Scientist in this role will perform a wide range of routine Microbiology tests unsupervised (after a period of training) and participate in rosters and out-of-hours commitments of a microbiology laboratory. In addition to these duties, staff in this role will carry out day-to-day quality activities, including equipment maintenance and participation in quality assurance programs. Staff will also be required to assist with general house-keeping duties, including but not limited to stocktake of consumables, general reagent preparation and unpacking of deliveries, as required. This position will be primarily based at the New Footscray Hospital laboratory but may be required to work at other campuses across the Shared Pathology Service, including but not limited to the Prahan laboratory. If based at a site with a 24/7 service, this role would require participation in a 24/7 rotating roster and associated on-call roster.

About You  

Qualifications Required:  

  • Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Laboratory Medicine with a major in Microbiology (or recognised equivalent) is required.

Experience and Skills Required:  

  • Experience working in a diagnostic microbiology laboratory.
  • Previous experience with troubleshooting automated laboratory analysers. 
  • Demonstrated verbal, written communication and organisational skills. 
  • Computer proficiency and good working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications. 
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines. 
  • Class C driver’s license and willingness to travel to the various WH and Prahran sites as needed.
