The Alfred Pathology Service (APS) is key to providing integrated and timely diagnostic capabilities as part of the largest public pathology laboratory network in Victoria.
Alfred Health supports the local community while addressing complex state-wide needs, including trauma, organ transplantation and HIV/AIDS diagnostics. APS conducts all pathology testing for multiple hospitals, offering a comprehensive range of services through five specialized units: Anatomical Pathology, Clinical Biochemistry, Haematology, Microbiology, and Human Molecular Pathology.

Alfred Health and Monash Health have established a partnership and are delivering pathology services at Western Health (WH), which includes, collection centres, branch laboratories at New Footscray Hospital and Sunshine Hospital and point-of-care services. We are working in partnership to ensure we meet future demands and continue to provide high quality pathology services for our patients and the community across both health services.
Position Summary
The Haematology department at the Alfred encompasses Coagulation, Haematology & Morphology, Blood Transfusion, Flow cytometry, Immunology & Allergy support for all units of Alfred health. We are seeking a dedicated and knowledgeable Grade 2 Morphology Training Assistant to support the delivery of high-quality diagnostic services across the Shared Pathology Service. In this role, you will work closely with unit heads, principal scientists, senior scientists, and laboratory managers to design, implement, and deliver comprehensive blood film morphology training programs.
Your responsibilities will include assessing current staff skills and competencies, developing targeted training plans, and ensuring all scientists are equipped with the knowledge and proficiency required to perform their duties to a high standard. You will contribute to the continuous improvement of training and development initiatives, introduce new scientific techniques and procedures where appropriate, and ensure compliance with all relevant policies and protocols throughout the training process.
This role involves travel across all laboratory sites within the Shared Pathology Service and plays a critical part in maintaining excellence and consistency in scientific and technical practices.
About You
Qualifications Required:
- Bachelor’s degree in Science, Applied Science (Medical Laboratory Scientist) or equivalent is required.
Experience and Skills Required:
- Proficient in general haematology and result interpretation.
- Proficient in general coagulation and result interpretation relevant to morphology interpretation.
- Proficient in advanced blood film analysis including result pattern interpretation, morphological diagnosis and reporting structures.
Desirable Qualifications and Skills:
- Higher qualifications such as M.Sc., or graduate membership or fellowship of any relevant professional body e.g. AIMS is highly desirable.
- Previous experience in haematology or morphology training.
- Demonstrate in-depth expertise in the relevant discipline.
